LIIF was honored to have our President Kimberly Latimer-Nelligan (top photo, speaking) share her expertise on a panel, "Rural Child Care in the United States," at today's USDA "2024 National Rural Child Care Forum" in the nation's capital. Kim was joined on this panel by other #childcare sector leaders: Moderator: Deidre Deculus Robert, Esq. Panelists: Susan Gale Perry, Heidi Hagel Braid and Barb Fabre Key takeaways: >Child care is infrastructure >The child care emergency is most pronounced in rural communities, including Native communities, due to ... - limited supply/choices - limited transportation - lower population density - fewer skilled providers - lower incomes This is why co-location of child care and #affordablehousing is one solution, with another solution being the creation of a dedicated federal child care facilities fund. #CHILDCAREMATTERS With the end of federal COVID-19 relief stabilization funding, the child care industry faces grave challenges to its ability to offer a sufficient supply of affordable care to working families—with another cliff on the horizon in September 2024 as the CCDBG expansions from the pandemic also wane. In the absence of federal funding, state investments can go a long way in providing relief to the sector. Additionally, it is important that states are investing to prepare their systems to accept and effectively implement the future robust federal funding that is needed to transform the sector.

The Ontario PC Party stands firm in our commitment to affordable and accessible child care for Ontario families. While the federal government champions national child care, they need to provide sufficient funding to support Ontario families fully. Thanks to Ontario’s own investments, child care fees in our province are already down by 50% on average. But for the federal program to truly succeed, Ottawa needs to increase funding and remove restrictive policies, like the cap on for-profit operators. This will help create more child care spaces, support providers—many of them female-owned businesses—and continue to lower fees for families here in Chatham-Kent-Leamington and across Ontario. We’re calling on the federal government to join us in building a child care system that truly works for Ontario families. Let’s keep pushing for a child care system that meets our community’s needs. Join us in advocating for fair and effective child care solutions for Ontario families. #ChathamKentLeamington #OntarioPCParty #ONPC #AffordableChildCare #SupportOntarioFamilies #DougFord #TrevorJones #OntarioFamilies #ChildCareFunding

In this summary of the RAPID special report, What Caregivers Want Policymakers to Know, First Five Years Fund writes that parents and child care providers want elected officials to know that families are struggling, and the time to act is now. Improving the accessibility and affordability of high-quality child care can be achieved through increased government investment, and sustained policies aimed at improving families’ health and well-being would advance child development. It is critical that elected officials enact change to support families, early learners, and child care providers. https://lnkd.in/g4i8MK6e

In 2022, Kentucky addressed child care staff shortages by offering subsidies to child care workers for their own children, a solution that has since been adopted by several other states to tackle the challenge of retaining quality early childhood providers. #Fact A loving family is forcibly separated every 10 minutes in the US. The reason? The family lacked access to food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or childcare. #HR5028 - The Family Poverty is Not Child Neglect Act will stop this practice.? Families need unrestricted cash... because decades of experience with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) has demonstrated that adding requirements and restrictions cause real harm to families with children. Work requirements, for example, add administrative burdens, like complex paperwork and mandatory meetings with sometimes inaccessible caseworkers. The burden on families to constantly document and verify their circumstances is exhausting and can actively discourage families from seeking assistance. Further, these barriers also limit the time families can spend together and threaten their collective good health. I am back with more #childcare information! Center for American Progress released an article on the Project 2025 proposal to eliminate Head Start. The idea is hilarious at a time where Child Care Aware of America is projecting most families pay around 12,000 a YEAR for childcare IF they can find it. The article shares that "low-income families dependent on the free services offered by Head Start wouldn’t be able to afford child care without the program, rendering them unable to work or forced to find potentially unsafe, poor-quality child care arrangements." That's more likely, women, out of the labor force. These aren't solutions to the childcare crisis. Read more about the proposed elimination and the consequences of that here: https://lnkd.in/gJZs_d76

In Marion County, rising costs of housing, food, medical care and transportation outpace incomes, creating a major challenge for families. More than half of Indiana’s ALICE households report that paying for basics is a struggle. For families with children, the high cost of childcare is one of the biggest barriers. We’re working every day to promote economic equity and close the wealth gap by empowering entrepreneurs, and supporting high-wage, in-demand workforce initiatives. ??Read more about our economic equity plan and other priorities in our Equity Imperative Strategic Plan: https://lnkd.in/dTQS8bmK #ImagineIF #IndianapolisFoundation #Indianapolis #MarionCounty #EconomicEquity?

Grants and contracts should reflect and respond to the diverse needs of families.Too few grants are available to Family Child Care, or when they are available there are noticeable disparities. We need to push funding to be inclusive to a variety of settings. Parents often prefer home-based settings for their child’s individual needs. The National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) ????Decision makers need to understand that our Family Child Care providers are leaders in providing culturally responsive care options for children and families.???? Yesy Robles-Brown In a broken system providers have to charge what families can pay. Family Child Care programs shouldn’t have to subsidize care with their livelihood. Yesy Robles-Brown, Daniel Hains, Tiffany Ferrette, and Anne Hedgepeth discuss what advocates and educators need to know about proposed child care rule changes at #naeycPPF
