I am a male gray dog at the?Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old. I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/21/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless. Shadow is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Despite best efforts to keep him comfortable, Shadow has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment. Shadow is observed to be wailing from his kennel and hypersalivating in his?kennel, leaving large pools of saliva at the bottom of his kennel while panting heavily at times throughout his time in care. Medically, Shadow is apparently healthy. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am a male white dog at the?Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old. I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/30/2024. Cedar is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Initially, Cedar showed signs of fear, including hard barking and growling at handlers when they approached his kennel, as well as growling at them in the yard. Over time, he became more social and comfortable with the staff. Currently, Cedar exhibits social arousal behaviors such as leash biting, mouthing staff, and, on one occasion, trying to grab a staff member's shirt. He responds well to pattern game training and is motivated by food. Medically, Cedar has dental disease and dermatitis. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. PLAYGROUP: PG2 - TOLERANT NO PLAYSTYLE On 9/9/24 Dog would approach the others with his tail wagging. Would approach the others closely and seemed on edge with the others (especially pushier dogs). Had to be removed from yard early due to altercation. ALTERCATION On 9/9/24 Buz was on edge with the pushier dogs coming out as his tail wags would stop when the pushier dogs got in his face. A pushy dog(Petey A1226537), got in Buz's face and this led to them going at it and Buz winding up getting pinned as the other dog got on top. Was able to seperate with pet corrector and airhorn. As a person who has been very closely involved with pets and animal rescue, the one thing I hate hearing more than anything else is the term "kill shelter." It stigmatizes open-admission shelters and the people who work there, and it makes the difficult task of having to take in every single animal that comes through your doors even harder because nobody wants to volunteer at or donate to a "kill shelter." So many people say, with their noses in the air, "I would NEVER adopt from a KILL SHELTER!" Congratulations, you're part of the problem! If you're not adopting the pets, they're getting put to sleep! Stop it. In this week's Paws and Effect post, I ask the question, "Can we please stop calling them 'kill shelters'?" (post link in first comment) I'm looking for people to interview about working at open-admission shelters for my blog. I want to show people what does happen--both good and bad--and maybe provide my readers with some insight about why these shelters exist and why they do what they do. If you work or have worked at an open-admission shelter, I'd love to talk with you. I'm more than happy to keep you anonymous! I'm interested in learning about the daily life of workers and animals, the effects of local politics on your work and your shelter, how public-private shelter partnerships help your organization ... and more. My animal id is #197838. I am a desexed male white cat at the?Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 7 months 3 weeks old. I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/15/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - out of country. Riff is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. If he is under-stimulated, he will over-stimulate when approached, and react with rough play, resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid further bite/scratch incidents. Medically, Riff is overweight. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. When I met Riff he was sitting like a little turkey with his leg over his arm. While he looked like he was about to begin a bath, he was calmly gazing out and checking on his neighbors. Or maybe he had paused because he saw a pipe cleaner feather in my hand. I offered it to him and we played for just a moment before he lowered his little leg and settled into a side loaf for some neck scritches. Riff sometimes likes to take a moment to gather his thoughts when he meets new people but he's affectionate, playful, and fun. He was brought to us because his person was moving, but even with so many big changes he has kept his sense of humor and bright curiosity.
