Instances of manipulation, #malpractices, and tragic consequences underscore the urgent need for stricter #regulations and heightened #awareness within the medical community and society at large. One such case, dating back to 2012 in Mumbai, involved the death of an under-aged girl who donated her eggs at an infertility center using forged age documentation. Initially, doctors faced charges of murder, #shedding light on the darker aspects of #IVFprocedures. Although eventually acquitted, similar incidents have surfaced across the country over the years, each with its own #variations and #complexities. Manipulation within the #IVFrealm extends beyond donors to encompass IVF centers and practitioners. Recent reports from Varanasi highlight instances where aspiring mothers were #duped by IVF specialists promising successful pregnancies through advanced techniques, only to face disappointment and financial loss. The allure of the IVF market, projected to reach billions of dollars in revenue by 2030, serves as a #breeding ground for unscrupulous actors seeking easy profits. The rush to capitalize on this lucrative industry has led to the proliferation of IVF centers #nationwide, often without adequate planning or expertise. Despite the passage of landmark acts by the Indian Parliament in 2021, including the Assisted Reproductive Technology Information Systems (Regulation) Bill and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, egregious incidents persist. These legislative measures were intended to safeguard women's reproductive rights and health while deterring illicit practices within the IVF sector. However, their effectiveness remains in question as cases of exploitation and misconduct continue to surface. The toll of such controversies is far-reaching, impacting not only the victims directly involved but also the #reputation and integrity of the medical profession as a whole. As the demand for #IVF treatments grows, the need for comprehensive safeguards, #transparentpractices, and stringent enforcement mechanisms becomes increasingly urgent. Efforts to address these challenges must involve all #stakeholders, including policymakers, law enforcement agencies, #medicalprofessionals, and the public. Enhanced education, robust donor screening protocols, centralized health data systems, and a culture of accountability are essential components of a sustainable and ethical #IVFlandscape. As India grapples with the complexities of #IVFtreatments, the imperative to uphold ethical standards and prioritize patient well-being remains paramount. My Review article “Factors Affecting Medication Adherence and Strategies to Improve Medication Adherence in Elderly Patients” has been published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Applications. ?This Study Concludes that Improving medication adherence in elderly patients is essential for maximizing therapeutic benefits and enhancing quality of life. Barriers like cognitive decline, forgetfulness, and side effect concerns must be addressed. Effective patient-centered communication is key for managing medication regimens. A holistic approach considering patient, healthcare provider, and socio-economic factors ensures better outcomes. ??Have you wondered how Ozempic and other weight loss drugs specifically impact women? ?? I dove into the research to find some answers, and here's what I discovered: ?? Women are at the forefront of the use of weight loss medications. A recent study found that the use of these drugs among young adult women surged by an astonishing 659% from 2020 to 2023. In contrast, the increase among young adult men was 481%. ?? However, there are significant knowledge gaps. Despite the growing popularity, there's a concerning lack of research on how these drugs impact women's health, especially during pregnancy. With the rise of so-called “Ozempic-babies,” the need for more comprehensive studies is urgent. ?? Accessibility remains a major hurdle. Medicaid currently does not cover weight loss medications, leaving millions without access. This is particularly concerning for the 57.3% of Medicaid recipients who are women. Here's a nice text recently published by Kaytlin Krutsch, PharmD, MBA, BCPS about weight loss drugs and breastfeeding: https://lnkd.in/djxf7958 For those who are particularly fond of TL;DR: "There is no data available on the transfer of Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro into breastmilk, or of infant outcomes. [...] A legitimate fear exists that if these drugs get into breastmilk, the baby could lose weight or slow their growth. However, these fears may be overestimated. These drugs are large molecules, which should limit the amount of drug that can get into the milk compartment. It also makes the oral bioavailability low…even if the drug does get into breastmilk, an infant would only absorb 1% of the drug present. This is the reason Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro are all injectable medications: they have trouble being absorbed in the GI system." Therefore, while actual data from breastfeeding women is lacking, weight loss drugs are EXPECTED not to harm the infant, based on pharmacological logic (and you can't spell pharmacological without logical ??). Notwithstanding, research is continuing and the InfantRisk center is collecting milk samples from mothers who are taking these drugs. In addition, as further mentioned, advice should take mother-baby dyad individual characteristics into consideration. #breastfeeding #clinicalpharmacy #weightloss

They secured the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for its Lumerah technology, which allowed an early feasibility study on pregnant women during labor and delivery.? Lumerah is a fetal pulse oximeter, measured using an external single-use photonic sensor. The current standard of care, fetal heart rate (CTG) monitoring, has low sensitivity and low specificity for detecting fetal distress. This can lead to unrecognized fetal distress and newborn neurological injury due to oxygen deprivation during birth. This study looked at cannabinoid use over a five-year period and includes detail on the most common drugs used in combination by this population.
