Have you judged DECA student projects before? If not, you should. You will see the benefits of #PBL project based learning and experiential learning - hands on learning over just classroom theory based teaching. #utah #schools #business #marketing #entrepreneurship #financialliteracy

Yesterday a few students, including myself, got the inimitable opportunity to sit down with the president of the ACLU, Deborah Archer, for a Q&A hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology and graciously moderated by Lauren Hall. Ms. Archer spoke to questions on how to stay calm amidst all the recent chaos, what we can do as citizens in various areas of work/study to support our communities, and much more. Following the Q&A Ms. Archer gave the keynote speech at RIT’s annual event “Expressions of King’s Legacy”. Here were my key take aways: ?? get involved with grassroots efforts in your area. “Small” victories are some of the most important (especially when times are tough). Find organizations near you that are working for the greater good and find ways to support them by donating or by lending your skills. ?? Organizations like the ACLU need more than just attorneys to do their important work! Accountants, data analysts, paralegals, HR professionals, and many more fields all work for the ACLU to support the cause. According to Ms. Archer, the number of non-lawyers outnumbers the number of attorneys. This means that you can find professional opportunities to support civil rights access regardless of your interest in studying law if those opportunities appeal you. ?? Appreciate the freedom you have every day and be sure to USE IT. Ms. Archer reminds us to ask each other, “what have you done with your freedom today?” Not only should we use it every day, we should be sure to work diligently to create a society that offers the future generations better lives, EVEN if you cannot see the results of your labors yet. Ms. Archer shared a quote with the audience to remind us that “we live in the shade of trees we did not plant, and drink from wells we did not dig.” It is imperative that we consider that although we may not see the fruits of all our labor, someday the next generations will. Overall, Ms. Archer gifted us a sense of calm that that we students had not felt in recent days. Her words affirmed that although times are scary, there is work we can do to fight against injustice. Further, there is work that has already begun at the ACLU. A particularly comforting fact that Ms. Archer shared with us was that the ACLU filed four lawsuits this week against various executive orders. Work is being done, and we are not powerless against what happens. Thank you to Ms. Archer and the wonderful people of RIT that worked so hard to make the event happen. I know myself and my fellow students are eternally grateful for the opportunity.

That big project you're working on... Do you have a written defition of what success looks like? Take 3 minutes right now to create one if not. Some examples and non-examples to help you: Examples of Specific Project Goals: - “Our fall 2024 Teacher Convening will showcase the diversity of our network, with at least 75% of attendees identifying as people of color. At least 200 attendees will be present, and we secure at least $15K in event sponsorships. At least one media outlet covers the event in a way that generally aligns to our ideal messages.” - By September 30, we have identified at least 15 dedicated, on-message teachers who respond to the majority of our requests for reporter connections. They represent at least 9 priority school districts and 60% identify as Black or Latinx. Non-Examples: - “We will run a great process to hire a new Policy Director.” - “Students will be satisfied with the experience they get with their academic advisors.” - “We will hold a retreat for our Cohort 5 participants.”
