Charities for Vets "Charity Ratings We’ve made this simple. We?investigate veterans charities?and sort them into three groups: “highly recommended,” “recommended,” and “not recommended.” It can be hard to tell a flower from a dandelion when you look from a distance. But you deserve to know whether these organizations are doing what you expect them to do with your donations. That’s why we’re here. We make our recommendations on the basis of four simple tests. (You can read about them here.) There’s no partial credit, and we don’t grade on a curve. Choose a category below to learn what we’ve uncovered, and tell your friends and family about this free resource." https://lnkd.in/gb7x5FVd

I don’t know how to solve modern problems I’m seeing. Some things we can’t know until we come up with new ideas and try them a few years to see how it moves in reality. But this is a personal experience I’ve had and the problems I’m seeing from my perspective… There was a fire that took out an appartment complex in my area. (Before the Cal Fires) Six families lost everything. I have listened to professionals talk about giving money as the most effective donation and seen the reports of clothes being dumped in parking lots to be scooped up and resold in thrift stores. So I was immediately in local comment sections pushing cash donations or monetary donations. I brought up the perspective “these fire Victims don’t want your unwanted clothes” and “their about to get 30 grandpa sweaters with no money for a new apartment to put it in” as kindly as possible. With some things you have to say what the problem is and that offends people. But there’s no way around it. People did add money to their donation lists and I’m grateful that happened. The churches organizing the donations also got such a massive clothing donation they have needed to arrange storage and are considering opening up a thrift shop. I have no idea how to handle religious systems that are causing problems without offending people. I suspect they are assuming I’m attacking their morals or faith or “goodness”. There is no pubic reports. It’s hard for me to not loose my sass with this so sometimes I just have to end conversations before I get heated. But religion is your faith and philanthropy is an organization evolved around helping people. Actually effectively helping. I don’t think the two things can be mixed effectively. How do we tell churches their clothing donations are incredibly valuable for multiple economical reasons but not for helping people rebuild their homes. As they are right now anyways. We don’t need people encouraging the public to give clutter items we need people encouraging the public to give people in tragedies money to rebuild. We need to be able to look at how systems are functioning with all the information and reports public to see if it’s effective. Give Directly might not be the perfect answer yet. But their impressive, and have been showing me drastically better Information than any other system I’m seeing. I’ve never seen a report saying they’re trying to encourage the people they help to take up their religious beliefs. I’m not seeing any common or complex manipulation strategies. It’s always gathering better information than before and handing money over and being as respectful of the people who needed the help as possible. We need to recognize what works and what doesn’t. Factually, logically, without “so you think I” shame strategy’s. We have enough to be effective help, we just need to think clearly and focus what we push on social media. Don’t be perfect be improving.
The New York Times: The massive fires have devastated communities in the Los Angeles area, burning thousands of homes and forcing the evacuation of more than 100,000 residents at one point. Here’s what aid groups recommend to make sure your donations count: Prioritize monetary donations. Money is often the most useful donation, giving organizations helping victims the flexibility to purchase exactly what is needed and use resources efficiently... GiveDirectly, a nonprofit offering unconditional money transfers, is also collecting donations for low-income fire survivors. The organization uses fire damage and income data to identify the communities in need the most, and then enrolls and pays survivors through an app used to manage food stamp benefits Propel, Inc, according to Tyler G Hall, a spokesman.
