Hi October’s been a busy and hugely enjoyable month. It started at World Aviation Festival in Amsterdam, which was followed by Blue Earth Summit and culminated with the #NetZeroFestival in London this week. The highlight however was chairing a roundtable, in partnership with edenseven, at the top of The Gherkin on #DeliveringSustainableOutcomes. As the sun came up over London’s skyline, it was a privilege to lead a stimulating debate between corporate leaders from a range of sectors across - Construction, Development & FM, Industrials, FMCG, Travel, Energy, Data Centres, PE Investors and Investment Banks. #Sustainability, #Net Zero, #Decarbonisation (now #Defossilisation?), and the #ESG agenda more broadly, are contentious, expensive, operationally challenging and regulatorily nightmarish subjects for businesses to navigate. None of these are going away and the complexity of these issues will grow, requiring ever more thoughtful leadership. The key themes from this month for me are: Collaboration across value chains and pan-industry is critical to solve the biggest challenges and it’s the BIG things that we should be focusing on. Most of the quick wins have been realised and with some seriously hard yards ahead, we need to be more ambitious. Capital has a choice of location. Policy needs to be shaped on this basis to de-risk investment into the areas of the economy that have until now not had the level of focus required. The regulatory environment needs to be appropriately managed for corporate leadership to spend more of their time and resources focused on sustainability led innovation and value creation. We need regulation, but we’ll get more people on the (electric) bus by talking about clean growth opportunities, not clean audits.
