Last Week, LA Y President and CEO Victor Dominguez was featured on FOX 11 Los Angeles - KTTV in a recap of the top stories of the year. This clip was from our launch of the Together In Service Initiative - a collaboration of nine different non-profit organizations including the LA Y, with the goal to reach 25 million hours of volunteer service by 2029. The Mersades Ann Foundation (MAF) has achieved significant success in the nonprofit sector by cultivating partnerships with community leaders, law enforcement, prison outreach programs, family law professionals, and other nonprofit organizations. Their collaborative approach, combined with extensive volunteer support, has enabled MAF to begin to serve the 1,550 children in the DuPage and Kane county area affected by parental incarceration. MAF's primary aim is to break the cycle of generational imprisonment by instilling hope and empowering these children. By prioritizing holistic well-being, the foundation seeks to create a nurturing environment that promotes healing and potential. The success of MAF's initiatives relies heavily on the engagement and contributions of donors, community members, and organizational partners. Despite what you may have heard, nonprofit organizations are allowed to lobby. There are simply restrictions on those activities, as dictated by the Johnson Amendment. Essentially, nonprofits cannot spend more than a quarter of their operating budgets or $1 million (whichever is lower) on direct lobbying. Additionally, nonprofits cannot endorse specific candidates or political parties. That means... ... you CAN directly lobby for federal, state, and local funding for arts and culture organizations (within the Johnson Amendment restrictions). ... you CAN educate the public about the impact of the arts on your community. ... you CAN advocate for policies and legislation that will contribute to a more vibrant ecology for the arts.
