Public speaking is an art ?? And true magic happens when you keep your audience engaged. As both an introvert and a public speaker, here are my 5 best public speaking tips to captivate an audience: ? Tell stories. Start off by sharing something personal. People connect more with real stories than with textbook speeches. ? Radiate enthusiasm. Energy is contagious! Use hand gestures, vary your tone of voice to keep things lively, and most importantly, SMILE! ? Break the fourth wall. Make your audience a part of the conversation. Don't be afraid to ask questions or get a show of hands. It gets people thinking (and keeps them awake too!). ? Know when to speak and when to pause. Don't be afraid to hit the pause button every now and then. Pausing gives your audience time to digest what you've said and adds emphasis to your points. ? Make eye contact, as if speaking to friends. When you look at the audience, it will make them feel like you’re talking *to* them, not just *at* them. These tips helped me get my audience engaged, resulting in an average speaker rating of 4.9/5.00 by attendees! Great tips, Lorraine K. Lee. I'm a huge fan of conversations in the room. In fact, I tested out a new style of teaching last semester - no lectures, all conversation. The students led everything. And engagement went through the roof. I was there as facilitator, not lecturer. Thanks for sharing!
And don’t look at slides if you’re showing a ppt! Look at the audience.
public speaking is my way of being creative. we think of creativity as needing be focused on the arts, but if you can be creative with your storytelling, and your words and capture an audience then THAT is truly impressive to me!
