This is what I learned from this week "IT’s about TECH #7 on the future of work" ? Since their beginning Digital Technologies have always inspired our imagination — beyond reality. Already in the nineties, when WWW was more an acronym for ?world wide waiting“ we dreamed of traveling through cyberspace into a new dimension. We eventually did, but the journey was quite different.? ? 30 years on it’s no different: Considering the tech that is available today we could and should be able to work in a completely different way. Why sit in a cubicle, staring at a screen and hitting a keyboard when we could immerse into a virtual workspace? Fair question.? ? Into exactly this question we dug a bit deeper at our recent “It’s about Tech” Event. Starting with the vision first — Chris Beyeler on AI and Philipp Sostmann on XR — and then looking at real world applications with show cases from Andri Bühler, Christoph Erb and Remigius Stalder. ? These are my personal take aways: ? #1 Skilled versus non-skilled: The gap is widening ? The Tech evolution will have one effect: The innovation adoption curve between innovators and laggards is expected to be widening in the years to come, accelerating the inequality between skilled and non-skilled workplaces with the former attracting all the talents. ? #2 What to do with efficiency gains: produce more or have more time?? ? Our capitalistic economic system has been brilliant in converting efficiency gains into productivity gains. But we all know: this has to change as our consumption has reached an unhealthy limit — at least for the world we all depend on. So, is the next wave of digital tech more about converting efficiency gains into time gains and thus letting us all work less??? ? #3 The human vector: let’s have more fun! ? Regarding the question if work time could be reduced in future our speakers were sceptical. What they could agree on though is that work could and should be way more fun if we manage to eliminate the stupid stuff, allowing us to?focus on quality. Ideally that would?mean: converting efficiency gains into human gains? ? I guess we will keep on dreaming, inspired by digital technologies… ? A strategic shift to opening offices globally, not just to market but to harness local talent, embracing remote collaboration to tap into a vast pool of skills. This approach is transforming economic activities, making them more concentrated in 'Superstar regions' and enabling companies to recruit from a talent pool that's hundreds of millions strong. As we look to the future, the narrative continues to evolve. Ageing populations and the twin challenges of productivity and population growth have been slowing GDP growth. Yet, the advent of AI and robotics promises a new era of scalability for knowledge workers, suggesting that within the next 5-7 years, the impact of a single individual could reach unprecedented levels. This means GDP growth could skyrocket, driven by an "infinite" workforce and productivity, amidst a backdrop of rapid technological advancements. However, as digital and virtual realms expand, the value of human interaction and physical space is set to soar, becoming a luxury for those seeking genuine connection. ?? Predicting how these exponential changes will unfold is complex. She mentioned that she feels tech isn't all that important, but I had to respectfully disagree. Technology isn't just a trend; it’s a driving force that shapes our world. From improving healthcare and education to facilitating remote work and global connectivity, tech plays a vital role in enhancing our quality of life. It allows us to solve complex problems, drive innovation, and stay informed in an ever-changing landscape. During the Industrial Revolution we saw the transformation from manual labor to machine-made goods. This led to major organizational and social changes, including the advent of factories and labor migration. A more recent transformation is that robots literally take over some of the heavy, dangerous or repetitive work in factories and warehouses, among others. The Digital Revolution ensured that we could quickly and efficiently store, retrieve, process and share verbal, written and visual information. First from a fixed location, later mobile from a random location. Now the application of AI is bringing about the next transformation by partly taking over typical brain work.
