Would you pay ?20 lakhs for a job? Sounds crazy, right? But Zomato just made it a reality. Deepinder Goyal has done it again—redefining not just consumer tech but also the very way we think about hiring.? In his viral #Chief of Staff job post, he’s offering a unique proposition:?? ??Pay ?20 lakhs upfront (donated to Feeding India).?? ??Zomato adds ?50 lakhs to a charity of your choice.?? ??First-year salary: ?0.?? ??From Year 2, salaries starting at ?50 lakhs+.? This isn’t just a hiring move—it’s marketing brilliance at its peak. The internet is abuzz, with people calling it everything from genius to outrageous. And this bold step? It’s pure Zomato marketing magic—disruptive, attention-grabbing, and completely unforgettable.? What’s more fascinating? This isn’t just about money or resumes—it’s about challenging the norms of hiring. I recently read Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, which says:?? ?“Resumes are ridiculous—filled with exaggerations and fluff. Instead, use cover letters to hear someone’s authentic voice.” Deepinder has embraced this philosophy, rejecting traditional resumes entirely. Applicants only need to send a heartfelt 200-word cover letter. A modern, impactful way to screen for authenticity over credentials.? This isn’t about a paycheck. It’s about learning 10x more than what an #MBA offers and working alongside one of India’s top founders in one of the country’s biggest consumer-tech companies. Some are calling it a "masterclass in leadership." Others see it as a bold experiment in redefining internships and hiring. The debate is on: Is this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow or an expensive risk for aspirants? The application process is as unconventional as the job itself—no résumés, just a heartfelt 200-word cover letter to [email protected]. Would you take this chance? Let’s discuss. Would you make this leap?

Is Sponsoring a Job Position Worth 20 Lacs Really the Way Forward? Yesterday, the founder of Zoko, Mr. Arjun Paul, pledged to sponsor the ?20 lakhs required for someone to join the Zomato Chief of Staff program. While this generosity has made headlines, it raises critical questions about priorities and the broader impact of such initiatives. On one hand, this sponsorship gives someone a chance to secure a high-profile corporate position, potentially transforming their career. However, we must ask: is this the best way to channel such resources? India, with its booming youth population, is teeming with untapped entrepreneurial talent. Imagine if this ?20 lakhs was instead used to support a group of young, talented individuals in setting up their own businesses. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of India’s economy, contributing 30% to the GDP and generating millions of jobs. By empowering grassroots entrepreneurship, we not only uplift individuals but also fuel the nation's economic growth. A one-time sponsorship might change one life, but fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems can change entire communities. Incubators, seed funds, mentorship programs, and skill development initiatives can unlock the potential of countless aspiring entrepreneurs. India is at a crossroads, striving to become a $5 trillion economy. Initiatives like these should focus on sustainable, scalable growth that benefits more than just a single individual. While the intent behind this gesture is commendable, let’s redirect our collective energy and resources toward creating an ecosystem where talent and ambition find equal opportunities. This is how we truly support India’s economic future. #EmpowerEntrepreneurs #SupportYouth #IndiaGrowthStory #SustainableImpact #CSRLeadership #EconomicDevelopment

The Zomato India opportunity, while marketed as a lucrative learning opportunity with the promise of a substantial 50+ Lakh salary from the second year, raises significant concerns about accessibility and equity. While it may appeal to well-off candidates who can afford the steep upfront cost, it effectively excludes middle-class and economically disadvantaged individuals who might otherwise aspire to such opportunities. The financial barrier is staggering—requiring candidates to shell out approximately 20 Lakhs upfront, with no salary in the first year, while also covering personal expenses such as housing, family obligations, health, food, and education, bringing the total to around 30 Lakhs. For many, this is simply unattainable. Those who consider taking loans (people can do anything these days- based on the data) face a unfavourable situation, as there is no guaranteed job placement upon completion. This model not only risks deepening financial inequality but also discourages talented individuals from pursuing what could be a transformative opportunity, solely due to their economic circumstances. In its current form, the program appears to favor privilege over potential, raising important questions about fairness and inclusivity in corporate hiring practices. It would be great if at least 10 individuals (no salary included) are hired for the role, provided with the learning opportunity, then shortlisted for the role after an year of observation, makes it a fair decision for everyone. Remember the iconic movie scene from “The Pursuit of Happiness”. The candidates are fairly evaluated, given the learning opportunity, carefully observed and then the deserving candidate is hired. Should You Pay 20 Lakhs for a Job at Zomato? Deepinder Goyal’s recent post has stirred controversy by stating that he’s looking for a Chief of Staff, but with a catch—the candidate must pay ?20 lakhs. Goyal clarified that the fee would be fully donated to Feeding India, Zomato's charity initiative. The selected candidate will play a key role in shaping Zomato’s future, including ventures like Blinkit, District By Zomato, Hyperpure by Zomato, and Feeding India. Goyal promised the role would offer “10x more learning than a two-year MBA from a top school.” But here’s the concern: What about talented candidates who can’t afford this hefty fee? While the opportunity sounds incredible, asking someone to pay ?20 lakhs upfront and work without pay for a year, with uncertain prospects, raises serious questions. This model seems to make the role accessible only to those who are already wealthy, effectively excluding talented individuals from less privileged backgrounds. It’s not exactly inclusive. Furthermore, since Feeding India is part of Zomato’s CSR, using job applications as a funding source feels a bit unfair. A better approach? Zomato could directly donate ?50 lakhs to the cause, making the opportunity more accessible to all. Jobs should focus on talent, not financial privilege. What do you think?
