Common errors I find when editing a translation: → Sentences that start with a passive clause → Incorrect use of ‘that’ or ‘which’ → Extremely long sentences → Extra definitive articles Common errors I find when editing an English-only text: → Incorrect use of apostrophe with its/it’s → Errors with capitalisation → Misuse of hyphenated compound adjectives → Inconsistency with en/em dash & quotation marks It’s funny what errors are more common when we translate vs writing from scratch. Have you noticed differences when editing? ?? If you’re looking for an eagle-eyed editor to review your texts, get in touch at [email protected] #litranslators

Most of the editing I do has nothing to do with grammar. Honestly, AI can handle most copy editing tasks these days. I DO believe understanding the basics like active vs. passive voice, redundancy, and sentence structure makes you a better writer. It’s always good to know the basics. But the real value in editing goes much deeper than surface level changes. It’s about: -Strategically packaging ideas. -Building emotional resonance with your audience. -Removing friction to add value. -Creating aha! moments that keep readers engrossed in your narrative. -Empowering readers to take action on something that's been holding them back. If good writing is good thinking. Good editing is good rethinking. I don’t promote my weekly newsletter nearly enough, but people keep telling me they love it so that must mean I’m doing something write (get it? ??) If you like the sound of becoming a better writer and self-editor so you can feel more confident in your content, subscribe to Cut the Fluff. Head to my profile and click “Hit publish with confidence” under my beautiful 2018 pre-Covid and pre-children profile picture. One day I’ll update it. But that day is not today. I send the newsie every Sunday :) Cheerio!

As a publishing company, we often see writers grappling with plotting. Here are a few reasons why that might be happening, along with some solutions to help you move forward: 1. Finding the Right Structure: Many writers struggle because they are stuck on how to structure their stories. Consider using classic story structures like the three-act structure or the Hero’s Journey. Outlining your main plot points can give you a roadmap to follow. 2. Fear of Being Stifled: Some writers worry that sticking to an outline will kill their creativity. But that’s not true. Try a flexible approach. Create a loose outline that highlights key scenes, but allow yourself the freedom to deviate as inspiration strikes. This way, you maintain a balance between structure and creativity. 3. Character Confusion: A plot is only as strong as its characters. Spend time developing your characters’ backstories and motivations. Use character worksheets or journaling to deepen your understanding of who they are and what they want, which can naturally lead to plot development. 4. Overthinking Everything: Writers can get caught up in crafting the “perfect” plot????♀? Get used to the idea of drafting messy. Set a timer and write without stopping for a specific scene or chapter. This can help you generate ideas without the pressure of perfection. 5. Building Experience: Plotting is a skill that improves with practice. Read widely in your genre and analyze how other authors handle plotting. You might also try writing short stories or scenes to experiment with different plot techniques in a low-stakes environment. Remember, struggling with plotting is a normal part of the writing process. Experimenting with these solutions can help you find your own rhythm and ultimately strengthen your storytelling. Good luck! #kratospublisher #writingtipsforbeginners

Uploading long-form content: formatting, optimising, adding internal links, adding images, meta-description, meta title, proofreading, amended. It's a laborious task (does anyone on here feel otherwise?), but, ultimately, quite satisfying.

When I was 19 I spent a day sat between a coffeeshop and a pub transcribing conversations I overhead. At the time, I wanted to be a novelist. And a friend had given me feedback that my dialogue was shit. So I went into public and transcribed how people actually talked. I obviously changed choice of career, but the impact on my writing that day had stayed with me. When creator content?– or in fact most ads – fail, the reason is rarely with who is in the ad, or how it was shot, or what trendy editing technique you employed. The problem is usually with the copy. So much copy sounds wrong and unnatural when read out loud. If you want to become a better writer, you must become a better listener.

Plain language! It might seem unnecessary to inform content editors, advisors, designers, and maybe even developers about this, but here goes: keep it simple, stupid! While we in Enonic build the engine, we sometimes have something to say about how you drive the car, too. So, use plain language on your digital experiences. Your visitors, stakeholders, and even your mother will thank you. ?? Here are some nice tips we picked up from the Norwegian Language Council: Know your reader. What do they need/want? Get to the point. Be clear and concise. Organize your thoughts. Strong headline, key points first. Keep it simple. Short sentences, everyday words. Active voice is your friend. (You got this!) Proofread, proofread, proofread. #writingtips #digitalcontent #clearcommunication #enonic
