Children of Dune - by Frank Herbert The third book of the Dune series. This book follows the lives of the children of the protagonist from the previous books and covers the current status of the empire he left behind. The central conflict is a power struggle between the major players of the previous books. This book is a departure from many of the themes of the first two books. More focus on exploring the consequences of the technology of this universe and less allegory for exploring political power and influence of current times. The schemes feel less nuanced and layered. A new arch of stories is being set up. Frank Herbert started exploring what long-term thinking with accurate predictions of the future would look like. How would leaders shape an empire if they could see far into the future?

Wiener Schnitzel with one of the great minds of our time, Carl Trueman, his lovely wife, Catriona, and Paul Coleman. Carl Trueman is the author of several books I highly recommend: The Rise and the Triumph of the Modern Self, Strange New World, and - just published - To Change All Worlds, Critical Theory from Marx to Marcuse. The most inspiring way to start the new year.

Have you read Ernest Hemingway's short novel 'The Old Man and the Sea'? Among Hemingway's later works, the most outstanding is this short novel from 1952. It is the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Hemingway was awarded the 1954 literature prize "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style." #WorldOceansDay

One of my favorite books "The Old Man and The Sea". Till now I remember the feelings of being mesmerized by every page of this novel. I have read the novel in Russian and in English. And still trying to figure out why I love the Russian version more. Maybe because of those feelings when I read it 1st time. The only reasonable explanation that I can find for it. The book is about life, living the life.

"At the heart of 'I’m Supposed to Protect You From All This' lie two overlapping mysteries: the mystery of the past, which memory can never accurately conjure, and the mystery of other people, whom you can never truly know." (Katy Waldman, Slate). What mysteries are you compelled to explore? Join "The Art of the Personal Essay" this May with Nadja Spiegelman, author of "I'm Supposed to Protect You From All This," A Vogue Best Book of the Year, and contributing editor of The Paris Review, to workshop the story that only you can tell. https://lnkd.in/gaXemcBG

"The way that we talk about history - be it our own personal history or something on a grander scale - says a lot more about who we are, what our morals and values and agendas are, than anything that actually happened in the past." Last month I got to chat with Lucy Nathan over at BookBrunch about my debut novel SARGASSA, worldbuilding, the road to traditional publication, and why straightness might be a cult. I have two books for your consideration this Sunday, which may or may not give you an idea of my thinking these days. The first is a book I read for the first time last fall: 1177 BC by Eric C. Cline. It explores in gripping detail the sudden collapse of civilization in the Middle East and Aegean at the end of the Bronze Age. As with most things, what was, perhaps, a paragraph in an AP World History textbook is a fascinating and troubling story of events coalescing into catastrophe. We may condescendingly think of the late Bronze Age as more primitive people, but we would be comically wrong. We have nothing on them, just a wrapping of different technology. Their world was interconnected, with complex economic, diplomatic, and martial systems. Great Power politics was alive and well. And it all came to a crashing end. The second book is one I read first when I was in high school and come back to frequently: A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. Goddamn, is this a great book. Utterly disorienting for the first third, dawning in understanding in the second third, and then terrifying in the inevitability of the final third. It is a wonder of story composition and one of the most true-to-life fables of human nature I've ever read. Highly recommend both books!
