Are modern awards worth the pain? This year, I am honored to be nominated for four awards—a thrill, a dream realized. But beneath the excitement lies an unsettling reality, a frustration that casts a shadow over the celebration. What does it mean to ask me to pay 7,000 kenyan shillings to attend an awards night, to sit among "winners" and walk away with only a certificate? No financial reward, no genuine acknowledgment of the sacrifices made—just a hollow recognition. Even voting came with a cost, each vote carrying a price my supporters had to bear. And what of my community—the very people who understand and value my work? Many come from underprivileged backgrounds, and they may not have the means to pay to cast their votes. Does this make me any less worthy? Should I, or any young person whose work centers around marginalized communities, be seen as unworthy simply because those who believe in us cannot afford to "buy" votes? Award ceremonies have become little more than marketplaces where organizations profit from the dreams and efforts of young people. How can I justify spending over 15,000 shillings just to attend, only to see every financial benefit flow back to the organizers? Is that not trading young people's dreams? Organizations need to inspire and support young people, not exploit them. Young people are breaking barriers, putting their hearts into making the world a better place. If awards are truly meant to recognize and honor our work, they must be worth it. This quiet exploitation must stop—young people deserve better, and so does the world we’re trying to change.

I was honored this year to be chosen as a Global Fellow with the Goldin Institute based in Chicago, USA. Twenty of us went through a training since March (it ends in two weeks) where we learned about Asset Based Community Development. My project was creating a website where we can map our creative assets (art, dance, music, theater, etc.). I just launched it last week and am now looking for people who can create profiles so that I can work on how these things will show up on the site. There is still a lot of work to do, but each day it gets better... ?Have a look! https://lnkd.in/eC9trcnd Creative PlaceMakers commit to having sustainability and honoring cultural diversity as core values. There are several uses for this mapping: *Finding like-minded people who might want to collaborate locally. *Visiting people and projects when traveling. *Working on projects or socializing virtually. *Using the data to promote the growth and support of creative placemaking efforts. Leadership in cities and neighborhoods can evaluate how to grow these assets and support them with funding, space, training, etc. Have a look at the Creative Categories and their subcategories:?https://lnkd.in/eUFXv3gN Do you see yourself there??If so, jump in and fill out a listing showcasing your creative interests. Membership is just $25/year. Go to Add Listing:?https://lnkd.in/eRKBfR3H Get registered.?Go back to this link to fill out your listing. It will be held until it is reviewed. Scroll down on this page to see examples:?https://lnkd.in/eUFXv3gN Thank you! Let me know if you have any questions.
