The historic #Flight100 was to demonstrate that today’s engines and airframes are capable of flying safely at 100% SAF for long-haul flights. As the aviation sector gathers at Farnborough International for the 2024 Sustainable Skies Summit, the Sustainable Aviation coalition has published its One Year On progress report from the Net Zero Carbon Road-Map. The update shows a significant reduction in emissions, due to the roll out of newer, more efficient aircraft and engines and to some modernisation of airspace.?Progress towards developing a home-grown #sustainableaviationfuel industry is also welcomed and will form a key part of the industry's efforts to decarbonise. Progress on #airspacemodernisation, however, has been slow and Government and regulators must show real determination and focus to deliver this vital reform. There are significant reasons to be optimistic, however. We know the technologies and policies and the industry is committed to taking action and to working with government. Aviation Sustainability: What Progress Was Made In 2023? The industry achieved several breakthroughs throughout the course of the year. Summary: The aviation industry made significant strides in sustainability in 2023, focusing on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and the development of electric aircraft. The European Commission's mandates for SAF adoption marked a crucial regulatory step, pushing airlines to integrate SAF into operations. This year saw several long-distance flights powered entirely by SAF, including Virgin Atlantic's pioneering transatlantic flight using 100% SAF. Additionally, the progress in electric aircraft development, particularly for regional routes, has been notable. Startups and established manufacturers alike have advanced in creating short-haul, fully electric planes, attracting interest and investments from major airlines. For example, United Airlines placed a significant order for electric air taxis from Archer Aviation, and AURA AERO formed partnerships for its electric regional aircraft. These developments in SAF and electric aircraft are vital for reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint.
