Tomorrow is UN #WorldOceansDay #WOD, a reminder of the vital importance of our oceans in sustaining life on Earth. ?? The ocean absorbs over a quarter of human-caused CO2 emissions and around 90% of excess heat, sustains the livelihoods of over 3 billion people, and is home to diverse ecosystems crucial for our planet's health. ?? Under the theme ‘Awaken New Depths,’ I want to draw attention to UN Environment Programme’s Issue Note, which was released last month. The note summarized the literature on Deep Sea Mining (#DSM) and recommended a comprehensive assessment of its environmental impacts worldwide. The Issue Note underlined that the environmental, social, and economic impacts of exploiting the deep seabed are uncertain and potentially grave: https://lnkd.in/epNpKXmB ?? United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) published a briefing paper in 2022 already, sending a clear message to its members and the wider finance community. Heading to the United Nations to attend World Oceans Day. Hope to see many of the you there in person or virtually! I'd also stress that Anthropogenic has been imbued with Ocean action from the start. We incorporated in the fall 2021 and presented the first thesis of the company after being invited by an Ocean action group to present, just 4 days later which was wild. Over the last few years ocean finance has grown and we are now developing intelligence solutions for the blue economy that includes data from both public and private partners to support emerging "Blue" finance which will support island economies, biodiversity, food systems, sustainable cities, islands and nations, climate resilience and much much more. The clock is ticking for our ocean! At the today event "Towards an International Panel for Ocean Sustainability", Lukas underscored a stark reality: despite countless promises and agreements, we are still falling short on the UN Ocean Decade's critical targets. With just five years remaining, it's evident that we must move beyond discussions and translate science into meaningful policies. One key takeaway? Every stakeholder has a role from political leaders to early career scientists. Together, we can drive change and push for ocean policies that protect our ecosystems and communities. EARTH DAY Earth day is celebrated on april 22nd .In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be observed on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. He hired a young activist, Denis Hayes, to be the National Coordinator. Nelson and Hayes renamed the event "Earth Day". Denis and his staff grew the event beyond the original idea for a teach-in to include the entire United States. Key non-environmentally focused partners played major roles. Under the leadership of labor leader Walter Reuther, for example, the United Auto Workers (UAW) was the most instrumental outside financial and operational supporter of the first Earth Day.[6][7][8] According to Hayes: "Without the UAW, the first Earth Day would have likely flopped!"[9] Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in recognition of his work.[10][11] The first Earth Day was focused on the United States. In 1990, Denis Hayes, the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international and organized events in 141 nations.[12][13][14] On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and 120 other countries. This signing satisfied a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. We are in the Ocean Decade, an opportunity to recognise the role our ocean plays in creating an equitable and sustainable planet whilst unlocking innovative developments for ocean science. I was pleased to read the Barcelona Statement released following the United Nations Ocean Decade Conference. While it is clear there are still challenges to overcome, the announcements and commitments made during the conference demonstrate the progress this dedicated community can make when we unite behind our shared mission to address the urgent need to restore our ocean. The inclusion of future priorities for ocean knowledge and science was particularly encouraging. Not only could these areas be fulfilled by the Ocean Decade framework, but I would also urge fellow business and sustainability leaders to consider how these priorities correlate with – or even contradict – their own strategies. With DP World due to publish its Ocean Strategy, the outcomes of the Ocean Decade Conference are a reminder of the interconnectedness between the ocean, our everyday lives and business – particularly in a changing environment – and the importance of enacting sustainable change. #OceanDecade

Happy #EarthDay ! Got the chance to chat about my favourite topic, the oceans, with B?rge Brende at the sidelines of #ecosperity last week. I am most familiar with the oceans as a source of wonder - humpback whales, coral reefs, seagrass meadows... I could go on - but it is timely to explore the perspective of the oceans as an arena too, for collaboration and cooperation at a time when nobody seems to want to. Multilateral agreements like the global biodiversity framework, high seas treaty have espoused this, but the World Economic Forum (cc Alfredo Giron Nava) is also championing the role of the private sector in dealing with these planetary crises, to invest in solutions that can ensure the longevity of the oceans and all their splendour.
