Running this race thinking I’ve got to get ALL the awards … Turns out, there is no award for sacrificing myself on the alter of my own perceptions of perfection and what I think others expect of me. For anyone who has ever wondered what a healthy, athletic mindset looks like, look no further than Max Homa. His stated goal here is related to major championships, but he hangs his hat on the endless work that goes into it knowing he is doing everything in his capabilities to achieve. Whether he ultimately does or not is besides the point, it's the fact that he never shies away from admitting where he wants to be while taking in pride with the steps he is taking to get there. When I read quotes like this, I can't help but think why more business professionals don't think this same way. Regardless of if your goal is attainable or not - becoming a founder/CEO, making your company the industry best, etc. - should not change what you are working towards. You may be setting a goal that will never be accomplished or is even measurable, but use it as a map that drives your daily work. Do everything you can to make it happen, and let the chips fall where they may when the game is over.

Besides that, it is interesting to hear these words from someone like Feynman, who was at the forefront of important, groundbreaking discoveries (and not by some people who are drowned in their egos and titles and probably not as prolific as him), questioning such titles and honors, that they might be superficial, it struck me that in the relatively recent history of human (compared to H. sapiens life), such honoring and titles in their current form are happening very very lately! Considering more than 2000 years of brilliant written history of science and philosophy, from Aristotle to Avecinna to Galileo to Newton, we have such titles only in our modern history! Are we commercializing everything, even in science? Or making up titles and awards day by day? And if yes, what is lacking (or, better say, fading away) inside us that we are compensating for by this? (It’s not innuendo; I am really seeking an answer!)

This week's 'Thursday's Thought' is one that I feel transcends purely a sporting record, and shines a light on true grit, determination, resilience, and belief. Attributes we can all learn from. Overnight Sir Mark Cavendish KBE (Cav) broke the long-standing record for the most Tour De France (TDF) stage wins (35), previously held by Eddy Merckx. Now this is not only a sporting 'win' but, when you begin to understand Cav's journey, one that has overcome more than most Athletes.. Cav won his first TDF stage back in 2008, and across his career has 165 professional wins, including World Championships on the Road and the Track. Alongside his wins, he has had to overcome two bouts of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), and numerous injuries that kept him from breaking this record. Now none of us are Cav, but why I chose this as my weekly post, is that in our own careers we are identified as being talented early in our pathway, just as Cav's early Coaches and Mentors saw such talent. The support of those around us, that can see our potential, is another parallel with Elite Athletes, and when times get tough, when we have set backs, like Athletes we double down and 'get back in the saddle' in our work. We may not ever stand on the top step of the dais, or wear the rainbow or green jersey, but once again we can all learn from Athletes like Cav and try to get to the line first, in our own race; with grit, determination, resilience, and belief.
