I don’t care if you are a broker, shipper, or customer, to be successful when shipping freight, you must have amazing preferred carriers. These guys are my number 1 and have been for years. The conversation attached tells you why. Myself and my team have been working with them for over 10 years. It is very easy right now to scrap long term relationships for “cheaper” options. My advice is to not do that. I see brokers doing it. I see customers doing. I’ve even had one of my long term (over 5 years) customers bring in a new guy to handle their transportation. I know their business, loaders, and customers inside and out. In a matter of a few months, the new guy has completely ghosted me. Won’t return phone calls, emails or texts. I have found out through my many contacts, that he is giving my dedicated freight to someone else over $100 per load. Definitely an easy decision to make in this current market. I just hope I am available to answer his call when he needs help. Brokers, please don’t jeopardize long term carrier relationships over $100.

If carriers referred to the people they service as clients instead of customers, it would make a difference in the industry. Customers buy things. ? Clients pay for services. Many trucking companies say they aren’t a commodity. And then use language that implies a commoditized industry. If a carrier wants to differentiate, there are two keys ways to do so. One is in execution, the other is in messaging. Don’t want to be a commodity? Offer specialized services. Don’t want to be like everyone else? Service different markets.? Don’t want to get beaten up on rate? Find ways to add more value.? Don’t like the market? Stop getting all your freight from load boards.? Not getting good freight? Change how you do your sales and marketing. Changing the words we use influences the way we think and see the world. If you have customers, you sell a commodity.? Want to know how to keep a customer? Don't make them leave? I know...you would never MAKE your customer leave, right? Well, if you can't offer them all of the services they need to keep their supply chain moving, someone else can. You should be able to offer LTL, Dray, Expedited, International, and Intermodal options along with Truckload. Can you do that? If you are a freight Agent - look for a broker that is able to handle these things for you OR if you are a small broker and don't have access to these services for your customer - consider an agency agreement with a broker for the modes your brokerage can't serve right now. It's all about serving all of your customer's needs.
