Neurodiversity, as we understand it today, emerged as a social movement in the 1990s. Building on the momentum of 1970s social movements that sought to shift away from the medical model of disability, Australian activist Judy Singer played a pivotal role in bringing greater attention to the concept. But here's something to ponder this week: What about the people before the 1990s? How might their work, lives, and experiences have been affected by the absence of this framework? The LGBTQAI+ community, particularly queer and trans youth, face even greater challenges due to discrimination and stigma. Last September 10th was World Suicide Prevention Day, let's focus on “Changing the Narrative on Suicide" by starting open, compassionate conversations that break the silence. We at Lovo Nova believe that every conversation matters. It's time to shift the dialogue—from shame and stigma to support and understanding.
