It's a confusing phrase to describe what I think is actually a pretty simple concept. "I heard him call the other guy a bastard." "Objection -- we can't take this witness' word as to whether he actually was a bastard or not!"

Sure, the definition of hearsay might be confusing unless you learned it from the incomperable Stan Klein, who taught evidence in the evening as an adjunct professor at my law school while he was a sitting state court judge. Thank you, Judge Klein!

Hearsay was one of those things that I just could not wrap my mind around in law school but suddendly made (almost) complete sense in practice. Can’t tell you how or why or what caused the sudden clarity, it just happened.
