On election day, some people drove round my town with a megaphone telling us all to vote for their party of choice.?Shouting about their option. In career guidance meetings, you sometimes find that people have experienced the same kind of thing. They have been on the receiving end of a promotional campaign. Hearing a lot of info about one option and why they should consider it. From a single or multiple sources. And that can be a positive. When you ask them if they’ve heard of - say sixth form or apprenticeships - and find they are inspired, positive, and excited about it as an option. Sometimes though, they sigh and are deflated. Oh that again. Heard all about that and it’s not relevant to me. Or so and so says I should do that. I’m not so sure. On the plus side, they are well educated about the option, helping them to rule it in or out. But their body language and visible fatigue indicates the option might have had unequal coverage. Too many people with a megaphone extolling the benefits. At the detriment of other options which have not had equivalent airspace. This is why personal career guidance (which by nature is impartial) is an important chance to consider ALL the possibilities. Here are some post-16 options resources I created recently to show what is possible. Shape of Career cards also show the different options in career as a whole, allowing people to see what they potentially could do. Looking at a menu of options with someone who is impartial allows people to self-select those they want to explore. Rather than listening to a megaphone. #opportunityawareness #SoMuchMoreThanTalkingAboutJobs Text description: 7 slides showing post-16 options, including: what you can study, study programmes, apprenticeships, supported internships, starting a business, employment and study, volunteering and study. Each slide shows factors to consider including benefits and considerations. The slides are in pastel colours with images to illustrate key points.
These are great, are you happy for us to use/adapt them?
Really good. May I please use this?
These visuals are amazing! I'd love to use these too if that is OK? They would be great for Results Day as well. ??
I love these Lis.
Lis McGuire RCDP, it goes without saying how much I adore you and your contributions and time spent to understand our gorgeous SEND community. This is just wonderful, and thank you ??
Great slides as always Liz!
Brilliant analogy and spot on! The cards also help prevent overwhelm as they can see not just hear about the options
I love your message Lis, and the resource - your generosity of spirit in sharing these with other CDPs is just such a joy, thank you. I'm looking at putting together something similar for local options for my team and schools/partners and really like the accessibility of yours.
Yes Lis McGuire RCDP, even in today's age, young people are still being 'bullied' into careers by others, without what they want to do, or what could be available to them ever being considered. ??
