I don’t profess to be an expert in many things. But there is one thing I really pride myself on. ?? Fizz. Love the stuff. I can tell a Tatty from a Bolly. A blanc de noirs from a blanc de blanc. I can spot (and disdainfully turn down) a Prosecco at 100yards. Plus, in case you’ve forgotten, I’m a bit of a swot. So imagine my delight when I was invited to a blind fizz tasting. It’s all my favourite things; It’s competitive, it’s allows me to channel my inner swot and I get to drink fizz. Every fizz we tried I’d say “Hmmm notes of brioche, the fizz lasts on the tongue. That’s champagne.” Or “this one is bit drier but still with lots of fizz, this is English.” “This one smells like sh%t, it’s organic.” I quickly established my authority…. And my team assigned me as the LEADER. Remembering to involve them I’d ask, “what does everyone else think” but they were always in agreement. We were assured of a win. Then the results came in. 4 out of 5 were wrong. As the failures mounted up I became increasingly embarrassed. Deep down I’d knew, that in my excitement, I had been a bit over-bearing. I wasn’t really listening to what others said. I was so damn sure I was right. Because, remember I’m an EXPERT at this. And it’s a timely reminder. Drinking fizz really is a team sport. And also… we make much better decisions when everyone gets a vote. I can testify that being genuinely open to other opinions can be really hard when you feel like you’re right. …but when solving problems harnessing cognitive diversity is just as important as singular expertise. Or in my case, presumed expertise. And with that in mind, I think I need to hone my skills. ?? Have a great weekend everyone. ? What a Week! The First 5 Days of Nine Fine Roastery & Bar ?? Five days, countless cups of coffee, and one unforgettable start. Opening Nine Fine Roastery & Bar has been a dream come true, and the journey so far has been nothing short of incredible. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at what the first week has been like: The Wins: ? Watching the space come alive with conversations, laughter, and that perfect aroma of freshly brewed coffee. ? Hearing feedback like, “This place feels like home” or “Best cappuccino in town”—honestly, it doesn’t get better than that. ? Seeing the team rise to the challenge, keeping the energy high and the coffee flowing even during those “rush hour” moments. The Challenges (because every great story has them): ? The we didn’t see that coming moments: from adjusting workflows on the fly to making sure every detail reflects the quality we stand for. ? Keeping up with the overwhelming turnout (seriously, you all showed up!) while ensuring every cup is crafted with love. ? Building a rhythm with the team while staying true to our mission of quality and hospitality. The Lessons: This week wasn’t perfect—but it was perfectly real. We’ve learned so much about ourselves, our team, and the incredible coffee-loving community around us. Beer on the Roof – Connecting People at Omnisys ??? ?? Once a month we let go of our “sobriety” a bit and head upstairs for “beer on the roof.” What do we do there? Exactly what it sounds like – we meet, drink beer, and eat Bamba or Bisli. Best of all, we discover that our colleague is not only a genius who develops algorithms but also climbs mountains… or parachutes from planes.? ?? ? Why do we even need it??? Because, between us, how much do we actually talk to our colleagues? Interaction with others at work is mainly within teams, but in life there’s a whole world out there. Such events break the routine, connect people who usually don't get to exchange a word (except maybe a "hey" in the hallway), and make us all a little more than just colleagues.? ?? ?? A few discoveries from recent events? In the last event we discovered that one of our people started his career as an auto mechanic, and only at the age of 30 did he move over to high-tech! ??? Someone else shared interesting experiences from the reserves. And of course, we also have a successful travel blogger who shares her stories while taking a break from “doing physics” at our company. ??? ?? ?? So what's the point?? Beyond the beers (which is a great reason in and of itself), we believe that when the atmosphere is good and the connections between people flow – everyone benefits. And you won't believe it – but it also improves the overall vibe at work.? ?? So we're already getting ready for the next event – buying more beer, opening another bag of Bisli, and waiting to see who’ll surprise us this time.??? ?? Today, I'm heading up to Napa for some sipping, sharing, and snuggling with my ONEHOPE Wine fam. Conferences and special events are always so energizing, but they can be overwhelming, too. Is It Necessary to Hold a Beer Glass to Fit in at Corporate Parties? Do you ever feel judged if you’re not holding a glass at corporate parties? People might ask, "Are you still a kid? Haven't you grown up?" if you choose not to drink. But what’s the real takeaway from these parties? Are they truly just about drinking? For some, they might be, but I think there’s more to it. These gatherings are a chance to learn about each other’s lives, share stories, and build real connections beyond work. It’s okay not to hold a glass if you don’t want to. Be kind to yourself and don’t do things just to fit in. At the end, It's your life and live it on your own terms not just to happy your boss or colleagues. Did anyone see this last week? Carousel Bar Leeds are offering lollies to all those leaving late at night, in an effort to stop them making excessive noise and disturbing the locals. The idea is that customers will be less noisy if they've got a lolly in their mouth. It's a move that's worked elsewhere and I sincerely hopes it works here too. You may be wondering why I'm interested in this. I live in Leeds, but perhaps not Carousel's target customer. Well, the reason is that this move is a fantastic example of Customer Experience wrapped up in a little Behavioural Economics. I remember some time ago I saw the great Rory Sutherland talk and he asked, 'Why do we let Economists always get first dibs on solving problems. Their answer is to fine you to stop you doing something or pay you to make you do something.' A traditional thinker may therefore ban those making too much noise, or enforce on the spot fines. But Carousel have thought outside the box and I applaud them for it. As not only does it provide an opportunity for a great moment within the customer experience, it taps into a cognitive bias known as the 'peak-end rule.' Peak-end rule is a psychological trait in all of us where we remember a memory or judge an experience based on how we felt at the peak moments, as well as how we felt at the end. What nightclub has offered a better end to a night than receiving a lolly? So, customers are more likely to remember their experience far more positively (if they haven't drunk so much they can't remember anything at all). But it also opens up opportunities. Will customers think of their lolly as a badge of honour as they made it to the point of the night where they start giving them out? Will people buy one more drink to make it to that time and so increase the bar's revenue? All this from dealing with a noise complaint. So the next time you want a customer to do something, or for them not to do something, don't think like an Economist. Think about how you can use the moment as an opportunity to elevate your brand and create a distinct customer experience. You'll be better for it. In other news, Drumsticks are the GOAT of lollies.
