I attended an interesting session from a coaching mentor about how this season is slow on hiring, but things start gaining speed in March-April. The question was about what we are doing in this slow season to prepare for that faster season. I know many of us women are caught up in the holiday season and have no time to spare to think about our career move in April. The industry standard for the percentage of women employed in tech career positions is 26%. (Statista) At the #internship career level, women make up 39% of the #techindustry workforce. Women hold 32.8% of #entrylevel positions in computer science-related jobs. Just 10.9% of those holding CEO or senior leadership roles are women. Some Career growth tips for #women in tech: ???? ?? Career Girl Global presents: Career Girl Chronicles ?? Every two weeks, Career Girl Global will be sharing stories from career women just like you who are overcoming obstacles, breaking barriers, and making their mark. By hearing from them, we hope to inspire you to strive toward your own goals. Let’s hear from the story of our first Career Girl: “I took an Advanced Computer Science class last year. Despite my success, I was picked on by the teacher. To him, I always talked too much, was never on task, and couldn't seem to get things right. He would come up behind me and mock the way I was speaking in conversations. Through all of this, I maintained an A in the course and was consistently ahead of the majority of the class. I would finish 2-3 day assignments in 1 day, but when I finished early he would label me "off-task".?? “I was one of 2 black girls in that 25-person class. That spring semester lit a fire under me. I worked more efficiently than ever, passing the final exam and even gaining college credit. By the end of that class, that same teacher said I showed promise. He even encouraged me to take future coding classes, even though it was something I wasn't actively trying to pursue.? “If I had to repeat it all over again, I can't say that there is anything I would change. I felt like I had proved something, to both him and myself. That it didn't matter how much I talked, I was someone that couldn't be ignored. I learned that I bring value to every room I enter, and every conversation I am in. My goal in life is to never let go of that.” This Career Girl is now going on to pursue Computer Science in university. It takes a lot of determination to stand out in a male-dominated industry like computer science. What do you think of her story? What would you have done in her position?
