I've lost count of how many times I have lost data stored on physical hard drives and USB's. Hard drives/USB's/SSDs have a set lifetime only regardless if the drive is just kept secure and offline. Vibrations, electrical surges, and even static electricity can damage hard drives and cause data loss. The safer option would be using cloud storage (plus physical backup) however, the platform to use should demonstrate tried and tested security measures. Don't forget to secure the physical drives as well and do not travel with sensitive information where drives can be lost or stolen.
