Port congestion has become a recurring theme in analyses of the demand and supply conditions in the container shipping industry. Recently, nearly 9% of the global containerships have been stuck outside container ports. Who would have thought that Shanghai and Ningbo would become the most congested ports in terms of capacity waiting to berth? Meanwhile, Rotterdam and Antwerp rank among the top five in this situation. The Manzanillo port on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico is very critical not only due to the surging imports from China, but also because every few years it acts as a landing port for the U.S.-bound goods when the U.S. ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are unable to cope on their own. What was fairly, but not outrageously, busy container port has changed dramatically with Mexico becoming the base of the manufacturers moving their final assemblies out of China, but not exactly into U.S. This and the ever larger vessels needing to call on the port led to the only logical decision. Expand the port. Thus, the Nuevo Manzanillo project will develop 1,880 ha on the Bay of Cuyatlan – an area FOUR times the size of the existing port – to boost its capacity to handle more than 10 million TEUs (comparing to about 4 million TEU design capacity now). The first phase envisages construction of two container terminals, a new customs facility and a high capacity #intermodal rail operation. The second phase will see two additional container terminals, although that is to be seen. #maritime #shipping #network #logistics

SHANGHAI YANGSHAN PORT. Shanghai Yangshan Sea Port, the largest terminal system in the world, boasts several unique features. Its location on the Yangshan Islands necessitated the construction of the Donghai Bridge, one of the longest sea bridges in the world, to connect it to the mainland. The port's deep-water berths can accommodate the largest container ships, making it a critical hub for global trade. It is equipped with state-of-the-art automated handling systems that enhance efficiency and reduce labor costs. The terminal uses advanced technology for real-time tracking and management of cargo, improving overall logistics operations. Environmental considerations are integrated into its design, including measures to minimize pollution and manage waste. The port operates 24/7, handling millions of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, reflecting its immense capacity. Its strategic location on the East China Sea facilitates seamless connections to major international shipping routes. The terminal features extensive warehousing and distribution facilities, supporting a wide range of logistics needs. A sophisticated customs processing system ensures the swift clearance of goods, reducing delays. The port has undergone continuous expansion to maintain its status as a global leader in maritime trade. Its role in China's Belt and Road Initiative highlights its importance in enhancing trade connectivity between Asia and the rest of the world.

#GoodDayatSea?? #dandcrewing #crewing #crew #maritime #seafarers #shipping #maritimetransport Shanghai Becomes First Port to Handle Over 50 Million TEUs The Port of Shanghai has become first port in the world to handle over 50 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in annual container throughput, Xinhua reported on Monday. The new record extends Shanghai Ports’ 14-year reign as the busiest port in container shipping and reflects China’s growing influence in global trade. Shanghai Port’s extensive network spans 350 international routes connecting to more than 700 ports across 200+ countries and regions. An official at Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG), which oversees all public terminals in the Port of Shanghai, explained that the volume growth stems from both increased export containers and higher numbers of international transfers and ship-to-ship operations. Ship-to-ship transfers at the port are projected to reach a record 60 percent in 2024, the official said. The report also showcased how the port’s efficiency has been dramatically enhanced through the use of technology, particularly with the 2017 launch of the Yangshan phase IV automated terminal, which increased efficiency by 30% while reducing workforce requirements by 70%. Looking ahead, the port is embracing green initiatives, partnering with Los Angeles and Hamburg ports to develop eco-friendly shipping corridors. SIPG energy manager Luo Wenbin revealed ambitious plans to transform Shanghai into a “green energy fueling center,” targeting significant expansion in LNG and green methanol capacity by 2030.

Mexico's Manzanillo Port Undergoes Expansion to Double Container Capacity Mexico's Manzanillo port is undergoing a significant expansion to double its container capacity. The Contecon Manzanillo terminal, operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), is investing over $230 million in the expansion project, which will increase its capacity from 1.4 million to over 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within the next five years. This expansion is expected to improve port productivity, ease congestion, and lower transportation costs. The project is also anticipated to create over 600 new direct jobs and 11,600 indirect jobs, making ICTSI one of the largest employers in the region. Additionally, the Mexican government is considering a $1.2 billion expansion project for the Port of Manzanillo, which would include the development of four new marine terminals, including a specialized container terminal capable of handling up to 1.75 million TEUs. “Without doubt, we believe that it is a feasible project,” said Manuel Fernandez, CEO of SSA Marine Mexico, the operator of Manzanillo largest container terminal. These expansion projects demonstrate the growing importance of the Port of Manzanillo as a key container handling facility in Mexico, serving the country's two largest population centers and manufacturing regions, Mexico City and Guadalajara. Busan to target shipping alliances with new $10 billion port to boost competitiveness Busan plans to invest $9.8 billion to develop a new container port at Jinhae by 2045, aiming to handle ships up to 30,000 TEUs and position itself as a major North Asian shipping hub. The project, part of a broader five-point strategy by South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, includes building nine berths in the first phase by 2032, with an annual capacity of over 6 million TEUs. Ultimately, the facility will expand to 21 berths, increasing Busan’s total capacity by 74% to 40 million TEUs. The ministry aims to consolidate operations by having a single operator manage the new terminal, preferably a shipping alliance like THE Alliance, which currently generates 6.5 million TEUs at Busan. This move seeks to improve berth management, reduce inefficiencies, and adapt to larger ships and evolving shipping alliances. The plan also includes creating a 40-million-square-foot industrial and logistics park to attract global companies and expanding Busan Port Authority’s overseas logistics facilities to 16 by 2032, targeting markets in the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia.
