Moyna & Sons has to work efficiently. When the COVID pandemic hit, the team realized how many parts were suddenly difficult to acquire. The Desktop Metal Shop System was installed in 2023 to 3D print 17-4 PH stainless steel parts in-house and the team now uses metal binder jetting for rapid prototyping in R&D, product improvement, and restorations. “We had such a hard time finding pieces and parts. Centrifuge Concept Design The goal for this project was to build a basic centrifuge optimized for 3D printing and easy assembly. The idea was to make this as a cost-effective and simple alternative to the options on the market. The design includes: ??Fixed-angle Rotor ??Chamber ??Lid ??Chassis These parts were designed with standard measurements for screws to ensure compatibility and ease of assembly. Also, allowances were left to counter temperature-related deformations after printing. In order to reach the goal mentioned, alternatives for certain mechanisms in the standard centrifuge design were adopted, as long as they did not alter the operation of the device. A particularly fun challenge was the hinge of the Lid. Traditional hinge designs weren't suitable for 3D printing, so I had to get creative to design a fully functional, entirely 3D-printable hinge. After some iterations, the result was a solution that combined 3D printing with fastening. This way the hinge would remain firm and still be printable. I enjoyed the challenge the project presented. It was as much a lesson in improvising as it was in precision design. It’s incredible how additive manufacturing continues to reshape the way we approach product development and prototyping.
