Early childhood education is one of the most critical issues in cities across the country. If we want to set the next generations up for success we must invest in them from birth onward. Quality education before kindergarten is one of the strongest indicators to a child’s entire success in middle, high school and beyond.

Hope Starts Here Detroit is a powerful initiative launched in 2017 to transform early childhood systems in Detroit. This collaboration brings together The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, M&M Fisher Foundation, various agencies, community organizations and Detroit residents to create a city that prioritizes young children and families. Detroit faces significant challenges: Over 60% of children under five live in poverty, and infant mortality rates are double the national average. Hope Starts Here tackles these issues with a community-driven approach, engaging 18,000 residents and 225 organizations through 125 listening sessions. Guided by Six Imperatives, the initiative focuses on improving health care access, providing high-quality education, creating safe environments, aligning systems and securing funding. This effort has already led to substantial improvements, such as better health care access and increased high-quality early childhood spaces. Together, we can make a difference. The upcoming legislative session is an opportunity for our lawmakers to ensure Montana is the best place to live and raise a family. Elevating early childhood as a top priority is critical for building a stronger Montana. By ensuring children in rural, urban and tribal communities across the state have access to safe and healthy early learning experiences and stable, nurturing environments, policymakers can help set the foundation for Montana’s kids to succeed. Strong systems are the basis for long-term sustainable change – every child in Montana deserves the chance to flourish, but not all children have access to the same early childhood supports. Our?2025 policy agenda?is a collaborative effort.?During the summer of 2024, the Zero to Five Montana team traveled across the state to engage with communities and gather input on early childhood issues. Partners in nine communities, including Billings, Cut Bank, Great Falls, Helena, Livingston, Lodge Grass, Miles City, Polson, and Red Lodge, shared their experiences around issues affecting young children and families in their areas. This on-the-ground input – from families and early childhood professionals as well as community and state leaders – helped inform our 2025 policy agenda. National Families Week is an important celebration in Australia, dedicated to acknowledging the vital role that families play in our communities and to raising awareness of the issues that families face today. This year, from May 13 to 19, we are invited to reflect on the theme "Celebrating Family Diversity and Connections," a theme that resonates deeply in our increasingly multicultural and diverse society. Celebrating National Families Week can take many forms, all of which contribute to recognising and appreciating the diversity and complexity of family life in Australia. Many parents with children of different ages often find themselves going around to multiple services from pre-K to kindergarten in order for their children to access early education. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham listened to the stories of parents and their needs at the inaugural early childhood summit on Wednesday, bringing together over 100 lawmakers, officials and stakeholders across the state to answer the following question: How can we ensure quality and accessible early childhood programs for families in the state? Story dreaming is a simple yet powerful way to grow magnetism to story, immersing children in the joy of imagination without tasking them or the Do This, Do That claustrophobia of Schemeland. This is one example using colour bands to suggest a story, each colour representing characters, settings or action. The book snuggled children will make the association but the real joy lies in re-imagining each band to be something else entirely to story dream or using brand new colour bands to make up their own. I’ll leave you to guess what story is being represented here, but how about story dreaming it to be a tale of a flamingo who likes to eat marzipan, chocolate cake and oranges with a spoon whilst sitting in the bath?
