It's hard to believe there is only one more month left in this fiscal year! We've welcomed 230+ new pediatric patient families to COTA and are now helping more people than ever before! In 2023, there were 1,700 pediatric transplants, but we couldn't serve 1,400+of those families. They simply don't know about us and they are in desperate need of financial assistance due to out-of-pocket expenses often exceeding $10K-$20K. Can you imagine discovering you now have a financial burden while your child is sick or recovering from a transplant? You can make a difference: 1.) Be their advocate! It was a pleasure to host a webinar on the successes and challenges of the &10aDay Child Care Plan. We heard from economist Jim Stanford on the macroeconomic impact of the first years of the program; the executive director of early learning and child care programs gave her perspective on the implementation of the program; we heard about what it has meant for low income families including sole-mother households; and from an early childhood educator about the difference it has made to no longer have increases in wages and benefits tied to increases in parent fees. The overall conclusion: the $10aDay is yielding many positive results in a very short time but needs to be strengthened and expanded so that the benefits are shared more widely and equitably.
