?? Did You Know? ?? The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Office of Head Start (OHS) has delayed the implementation of the new competitive threshold for the Instructional Support domain of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS?). ?? The threshold increase from 2.3 to 2.5 will now take effect on August 1, 2027, instead of 2025. ??? This change accommodates time lost during the pandemic and aligns with the rollout of the updated CLASS? 2nd Edition. ???? The first full implementation of the 2.3 threshold began this fiscal year, with a focus on supporting Head Start programs through training and technical assistance. #HeadStart #EducationMatters #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #PolicyUpdate #SupportOurTeachers

How do you nail the first week?? In this weeks Newsletter Snippet we wanted to share some insight from Team Heddle's two days in the Midlands, collaborating with #SENDCOs and Early Years teachers as part of an EEF/DfE project. Here’s what we learned from schools that get it right: ? Regular start times: Align new pupil start days with the school’s rhythm—like starting on a Thursday with tours earlier in the week for prep time. ? Simplify paperwork: Focus on essential info for day one and streamline induction forms to ease the burden on families. ? Clear communication: Use a simple template and establish how staff want to receive new pupil information (email, shared folders, or paper copies). ? Language assessment after six weeks: Waiting gives a clearer picture once the pupil has settled in. ? Prioritise wellbeing: Happy, secure pupils are better learners. The first few weeks should focus on helping them feel welcome. The result? A smoother start for pupils and less stress for teachers. Want access to more strategies and resources like these? Is it really possible to keep your sanity when new arrive pupils mid-term? In last week's Heddle EAL training, one theme kept coming up: many schools allow new pupils to start as soon as they arrive. This puts enormous pressure on teachers to make it work with no time to prepare. But some schools took a different approach: they delayed the start slightly. The result? They often had better systems for induction, buddying and initial assessments too. This small delay made a big difference for everyone involved. We heard three main objections to a delayed start: → Child protection concerns → Parents have to work → Bums on seats If a pupil is safer in school, they need to be in school. No argument there. If we're asking staff to shoulder an extra burden then transparency matters. It has to be an open conversation. The third is harder to support: so long as the pupils are on roll by census day there's no financial benefit to an earlier start. ?? Solution Start new pupils on a Thursday. Why? Use Tuesday for tours and induction Give teachers time to prepare Allow pupils a calm start It’s predictable, manageable, and it work for everyone. We didn’t land on this solution instantly—it came after much discussion. But it seemed to meet everyone’s needs while keeping things calm and intentional for both staff and pupils. I’d love to know how you do handle mid-term arrivals? Is your approach structured, fluid, or somewhere in between? PS: if you're not subscribed to the Heddle EAL Monday briefing then you're missing out on practical, teacher-friendly ideas for EAL. It's free and worth every second of your inbox time! #EAL #ELL #EALD
