With the holiday season just around the corner, many of us start gearing up for traditions, family time, and a break from the grind. But if you're a divorced parent—especially a dad—this time of year can also come with its own set of hurdles. Juggling visitation schedules, figuring out whose turn it is to host, and coming back to an empty house when it's not "your" holiday can really take a toll. For a lot of dads, the holiday season brings up a mix of excitement and anxiety. Society doesn’t always make it easy for men to talk openly about missing their kids or feeling the weight of navigating traditions on their own. But let's be honest: this stuff can hit hard on a mental and emotional level, often leading to loneliness, frustration, and even a touch of guilt. So, this holiday season, let’s keep a few things in mind: It's okay to feel it: There’s no shame in admitting the season can be rough. Reaching out to friends, support groups, or even a professional can make a world of difference. Redefine the traditions: Maybe this year, you're celebrating on a different day. That doesn’t make it any less meaningful. Start your own traditions—something your kids will look forward to and remember fondly. Take care of yourself: Make your mental health a priority, whether that’s through exercise, hobbies, or just some quiet time to recharge. Being present for yourself helps you be a stronger dad when it's your turn to be with the kids. To all the dads going through this—know you’re not alone. Going from 1 kid ?? 3 under 3 is no joke. Here are the top 3 lessons I've learned ???? 1. You have to work as a team. There is no way either my wife or I could've done this ourselves. We had to come together and make sure we were aligned in what we were doing so we could accomplish our goals. 2. You have to treat your time like it's sacred. My natural style is NOT organized. I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kinda guy. This does NOT work anymore if I want to be a good husband, father, and person. To live up to those responsibilities + male the changes to my health, I had to guard my time as the most precious resource it is. 3. You CAN do hard things. Going from man to man coverage to zone defense is no joke. At any given moment you might be stopping your 2 yo from sticking something in your electrical outlet while comforting a screaming baby as your dog's barking at a squirrel in the backyard. It's in those moments it takes effort to feel calm, cool, and collected. (we often don't ????) But as you strive for your best, you get a little better each day. Parenting is hard. Parenting 3 under 3 is ridiculous ?? But I wouldn't give it up for the world. Parents, what have you learned raising your kids? Stretch regularly - no matter whether you've been running or resting, a stretch will make everything better ?? Drink plenty of water - you can choose whether that's gross water from an old plant pot outside or lovely fresh water in a glass ?? Protect your rest - make sure where you sleep is comfy, whether that means an extra blanket or a cool breeze ?? Spend time with your besties - connection with others is what makes this life meaningful ?? Be clear on your boundaries and needs - you don't always need to use your claws, but it can be helpful to remember you have them ?? Don't sweat the small things - make time for play, whether that's chasing leaves outside, or running around inside the bath trying to catch your tail And all of this advice goes doubly for anyone with caregiving responsibilities, whether that's at home or at work (I class leadership as a caregiving role). It can be easy to overlook self-care when there are so many other pressing needs that you can see and that you know you can meet. But as the old saying goes, you can't pour from an empty cup. August is always a great month to stop, reflect, and implement new habits. Why? Thanks to the school holidays, many people step away from the grind to take a break. Even if you don't have children or yours are grown, there's a noticeable ease in the air with schools closed and many people on holiday. It's the perfect time to assess where you are and where you want to be. Now, I understand this may not apply to parents juggling the summer holidays and work. As one of those jugglers, I often use this month to slow down and reflect. It also helps that it's my birthday month, giving me even more reasons to reflect. With the summer sun still out past 8pm in the UK and no school run, it’s the ideal time to add a few health goals before September arrives and the pace picks up again.
