It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been active on LinkedIn, and taking a mental break has been important during this overwhelming time. ?? One of my star sites, Zenith Clinical Research, was awarded an incredible opportunity through Parexel's Next Generation Scholarship Program to attend the Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS) Global Site Solutions Summit, an initiative designed for emerging sites. ?? I was thrilled for the chance to help one of our newer sites gain exposure and connect with industry leaders. ?? Unfortunately, I could not attend due to the passing of my mother that same weekend. ?? Life sometimes requires us to shift our focus to personal priorities. But I’m grateful that our PI, Moises Issa MD, and Site Director, Daniel Goldfarb, PhD, were able to make it and connect with some amazing people in the industry. I know they represented us well and formed valuable partnerships. ?? Coming back to work has been a comfort. ?? It’s important to work hard, but it’s just as important to give ourselves and others grace when we’re suffering through difficulties. For many of us, our work is a place of purpose, especially when it’s meaningful. ?? I’m so thankful to my incredible colleagues who’ve supported me through this tough time. ?? Looking forward to reconnecting with everyone and continuing to build relationships formed at the summit. System Leadership… so what? Last December, almost to the day, I met with CXs and senior colleagues from across Humber and North Yorkshire to conclude a two part facilitation in which we challenged the prevailing culture and set a new direction for system leadership. We even wrote it down… what we are moving away from, what we are moving towards. (Confess the format was pinched from the Kings Fund). One year later, we are discussing: - aligning over ￡1Bn NHS resource with local authorities by creating an open book on all influenceable health and care spend at place ?? - a provider and local authority led approach to ‘radical place leadership’ developing in one of our six places - how to wrap new mayoral combined authorities into our operating model - protecting inequalities funding against a really challenging budget position - significant service redesign, expertly led by our provider collaboratives - how we respond to a system sponsored consultation on how the NHS needs to change in HNY – and 98% of our respondents have said it must change! Not bad, eh? Thinking as a system, distributing leadership, creating an authorising environment, dispensing with bureaucracy. It’s a great journey to be on, made possible by the leadership in the room. (You know who you are.)

Our work as healthcare leaders is not just about tracking KPIs and leading initiatives; it's ultimately about making a difference in people's lives. As leaders, we have the unique opportunity to tap into the prosocial motivation of our teams—the desire to help others and contribute to the greater good. I recently read a fascinating study by Adam Grant highlighting how connecting team members with the beneficiaries of their work can significantly boost performance. When fundraisers met scholarship students, their motivation soared, leading to increased calls and donations. This shows that intrinsic motivation—the internal drive to engage in an activity because it is inherently rewarding and meaningful. I have observed that many healthcare leaders often overlook the importance of fostering this intrinsic motivation, which causes teams to lose sight of their deeper purpose. In fast-paced environments, individual contributions can go unnoticed, which leads to feelings of undervaluation. In many corporate settings, rigid hierarchies can create barriers to open communication and a lack of psychological safety, which can deter team members from expressing their concerns or taking initiative. When team members feel valued, connected, and aligned with their purpose, they are more likely to deliver exceptional care and drive positive outcomes for our patients.

Had a recent major milestone with #VCSE developments in Bristol, North Somerset & South Gloucestershire – sharing the highlights for now… My role as VCSE Lead is to develop the strategic approach to VCSE integration into Healthier Together, our integrated care system. I started in this brand-new role 7 months ago – it’s busy and exciting and brilliantly complex! Lots of discussions and collaboration with many partners led to a VCSE Developments & Integration paper co-authored with Fiona Mackintosh that went to the ICB Board recently. I am delighted and proud that the following proposals were wholeheartedly approved and these are some of the practical implications: 1. new principle: ‘invest in VCSE activities as a positive action to address systemic and health inequalities’. This will mean: investments through our new VCSE Brokerage Framework (more very soon); taking risks and doing things differently. 2. new principle: ‘design for smaller’ to enable micro and hyper-local VCSE activities. This will mean: we have to make processes and practices that lead to micro investments that are doable for most of the VCSE sector. 3. new principle: ‘grant first’ to enable appropriate investment in micro and hyper-local VCSE activities. This will mean: familiarity with grants (compared to lack of familiarity and barriers associated with contracts and procurement) will encourage innovative VCSE- and community-led proposals. 4. co-design and collaborate to develop a new Healthier Together VCSE Integration Strategy. This will help us to build on our great work to date and frame our collective plan for the next few years. I believe these new approaches are ground-breaking and they will consolidate our collaboration and enhance our ICS’s work to address health and systemic inequalities. Lots of work to be done to implement these new approaches across our ICS partners, including two acute trusts North Bristol NHS Trust University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, the community provider Sirona care & health, the mental health provider Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, three local authorities South Gloucestershire Council North Somerset Council Bristol City Council, the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB and 8,000 #VCSE organisations… gonna be busy!!! #innovation #systemchange #people #communities #VCSE #partnership

POV: How DO you deliver your strategy within an NHS Trust when the landscape keeps changing? And how do you ensure the outcomes work for today as well as lay the groundwork for the next set of innovations to come? 'Fertile conditions' was the theme of this morning's Teams chat with my colleagues - you'd be amazed at how much people at Accenture are willing to contribute to a colleague's request for input at 8.30 on a Monday morning! We talked about how to plan to use only 70% of your IT capacity in a world where opex is in short supply.....hmmm, yes there are quite a few who have to deal with that on a regular basis. I'm back to my previous post where I mentioned the annual funding circus..... but I digress.... We quickly moved away from funding and onto people and psychological safety - how to create an environment where people feel safe to raise issues and ideas. When you have no opex, it's difficult to invest in the right level of training required to embed change and lay those critical foundations for the future. To quote our Luminary Dame Jackie Daniel, you have to be 'tough on the issues and gentle on the people'. Sometimes that means making the bold decision to stop the strategy and programme and reassess. Getting back to the funding issue, there is no doubt in the NHS that fortune favours the brave - those Trusts willing to be first-of-type are often well rewarded, and that in turn helps lay those fertile environment foundations. After you've developed your strategy, can the Board look itself in the mirror and answer this question: is our vision (and plan) good enough to withstand a complete change of leadership? ??
