The Atlantic Ocean was known as Ethiopian Ocean until the 19th century. ___ The Original name of the Atlantic Ocean is the Ethiopian Ocean. In the Greek language, Ethiopian means "people with burnt face" they used it to described all African people. To them, the masters of the oceans were African people and the only people as of then that had technology to make massive voyages around the earth were Africans. Today Atlantic Ocean in classical geographical works was known as Aethiopian or Ethiopian Sea or Ocean. The name remained in maps from ancient times until 19th century. The name Ethiopian Ocean existed in Lucem Producta until the mid-19th century, e.g. on the map Accuratissima Totius Africae, engraved by Johann Baptist Homann and Frederick de Wit and published by Jacob von Sandrart in Nürnberg in 1702. The term Aethiopian was linked to the fact that it was historically called Aethiopia because Africa west and south of Egypt was known as Aethiopia. Classic use of the term has become defunct nowadays. Today nation of Ethiopia, then known as Abyssinia, is located nowhere near its namesake body of water, but in the opposite eastern end of Africa, which is much closer to the Indian Ocean and its subset of the Red Sea. Decades after the names Ethiopian Ocean or Ethiopian Sea had fallen into disuse in reference to the Southern Atlantic Ocean, botanist William Albert Setchell (1864–1943) used the term for the sea around some islands near Antarctica. https://lnkd.in/eZ-ERkHM

Located on an isthmus separating two harbours, it became the most important harbour city of eastern Lycia - but never belonged to the Lycian League [Strabo 667]. #Phaselis was founded in 691 BC by settlers from #Lindos on #Rhodes - the same year in which #Rhodian colonists founded the city of #Gela on #Sicily. As a #Dorian city, and indeed the only purely Greek city in #Lycia, #Phaselis differed in language and culture from all of its surrounding neighbours. The wealth of the city came from its strategic location on the maritime route linking #Greece to #Syria, #Palestine and #Egypt. Its wealth, if we believe #Herodotus, was augmented by piracy, an activity regularly practiced by its inhabitants. This may be a plausible fact, considering that ship prows are depicted on both sides of the ancient city's #coins.

CASTLES OF LIGHT OVER THE ALENTEJO Portugal was born in the darkness of war, the Reconquista to be specific. A young prince of a small county saw his chance to carve a nation from the chaos of the 12th century – and using guile and persistence, he pushed hard into the Moorish lands to his south. But war was nothing new to the land now known as the Alentejo. It has seen invaders from Celt nations, Greece, Carthage and North Africans Moors. Certainly, there were long periods of peace and bright prosperity during the Pax Romana, and the Portuguese Renaissance. But, given the plains and sun of the Alentejo, it also made an easy route for Spanish and French invaders - so fortifications, forts and castles were not only common, they were integral in defending the region and its long border. First there were ancient walled towns, then came Roman walled garrison towns, followed by fortified Moorish strongholds, and then centuries of defensive castles, not built as palaces for lords, but for the defense of a young Portugal, and the road to Lisbon.
