The 2024 Capitol Foundation ornament features Jean-Antoine Houdon’s iconic statue of George Washington, which has stood in the building’s rotunda almost continuously since 1796. The sculptor traveled from France to visit Washington at Mount Vernon in 1785, where he made a plaster mask and detailed measurements of the retired general and future president. The result was considered a remarkable likeness and included symbols that celebrated Washington as statesman, soldier and citizen. Available at the Virginia Shop, this ornament makes a perfect gift! The Statue of Liberty's crown has 7 rays, and they represent the 7 seas and continents of the world. The 7 rays symbolize the universal concept of liberty and the idea that freedom is a fundamental human right that should be shared by all people, regardless of their geographical location or background. - The 7 seas: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Southern, Mediterranean, and Red Sea - The 7 continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America The Statue of Liberty's designer, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, intended the 7 rays to symbolize the idea that liberty is a beacon of light that shines out to all parts of the world, guiding people towards freedom and democracy. It's worth noting that the Statue of Liberty's crown is not just a symbolic element, but also a structural one. The 7 rays are part of the statue's framework, and they help to support the copper sheets that make up the statue's exterior. On July 4, 1884, France bestowed upon America a symbol of freedom and democracy that would forever change the New York City skyline. The Statue of Liberty, designed by the brilliant Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and constructed by the ingenious Gustave Eiffel, was meticulously shipped across the ocean and reassembled on Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island). Two years later, on October 28, 1886, this magnificent copper beauty was officially dedicated in a grand ceremony. A gift from the people of France to the people of America, the Statue of Liberty has become an iconic beacon of hope, freedom, and opportunity, inspiring generations to chase their dreams and strive for a better life.

【???????????? ???? ??????????????: Color Changes Over the Years】 The Statue of Liberty's iconic green hue is actually the result of a natural process called oxidation. When France gifted the statue to the United States in 1886, it sported a ?????????? ?????????????color. Over time, exposure to air and moisture caused the copper to react, forming a green patina on its surface. This patina is a layer of copper carbonate, a stable compound that protects the underlying copper from further weathering. The color change wasn't instantaneous. Here's a breakdown of the statue's transformation: 1) Initial Reddish-Brown: The initial oxidation process resulted in a reddish-brown color, like a penny left out in the open air. 2) Gradual Greening: Over several decades, the copper carbonate layer thickened, leading to the familiar green color we see today. Historical photos suggest this transformation was complete by 1920. The Statue of Liberty's green patina is a testament to both chemistry and the enduring spirit of liberty it represents. It's a beautiful reminder of how natural processes can shape and preserve iconic landmarks.

Isn't it interesting that there is a statue of George Washington in London? No one is screaming that it should be torn down because he was a "traitor" to England. The English are able to see the greatness in someone who fought them, but was also dedicated to his cause, brave, a hero to many, and basically a good person. Sadly we cannot see that about Robert E. Lee, who was fighting for secession to save the economy of the Southern states. Or in the Reconciliation statue that was removed, despite massive opposition, from Arlington National Cemetery. Or the statues of Columbus, falsely accused of supporting "genocide" by people who chose to ignore that his diaries say something entirely different about him. It seems to me that if the British are capable of respecting the bravery and courage of someone who was "not on their side" and are not coming apart at the seams because a statue of that person is in their view, Americans should be capable of similar tolerance and acceptance of the differences in the others among us. The divisions in this country are tearing it apart. I think we need to do one of two things - either stop tearing down each other's statues and monuments and work together to find common ground and re-learn the art of compromise, or ask Congress to change the law and allow the blue states and the red states to secede and have two Americas. Because as the old saying goes, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." https://lnkd.in/g7NSEeW6 #statue #georgewashington #england #history #cancelculture

Time Horizon; visiting the sculptures of Anthony Gormley in Norfolk. It wasn’t immediately apparent but all 100 sculptures are located along the same horizontal datum within the grounds of the estate. It’s just the landscape levels that change, giving the impression that the sculptures are raised above or sunk into the earth. So it is with the design of Interiors : the reasoning behind the setting out of the internal architecture, fixtures and fittings is not always clear but is so important to the success of a project. https://lnkd.in/edPiKnEt

This week's Real Estate #KYC aka Know Your Community highlight is not a park or greenspace but an adorable import spot to find handmade wood furniture for your new place. If you happen to go gaga for mango wood, love eclectic/boho, or just want some sturdy, attainable pieces of furniture for your new space, check out Nadeau! Highly sustainable due to its cultivation as a fruit tree, mango wood prevents waste and can make beautiful furniture. Mango trees grow to maturity usually at about 15 years old, which is pretty quick for hardwood. After those 15 years, mango trees stop growing fruit and are cut down for furnishing use. A planted teak tree, for example, often reaches maturity in 60 years and a wild teak tree after 80 years. https://buff.ly/3B6rAa7 #closedwithinegrity #atlantarealestate #georgia #realestate
