We all know that sustainability is a frequent topic of discussion in the food and agriculture industry. Still, as much as it has been tried, transitioning to a more sustainable business can present some challenges. Here are some exciting insights from RaboResearch after they attended Sustainable Packaging Coalition Impact 2024 last April in New Orleans. ?? Due to the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act (California Senate Bill 54), there is a clear goal for reducing 25% of weight and plastic components by 2032, which is a first in US history. ??Innovations are coming to support more sustainable practices and a more efficient recycling system, like analogue and digital solutions to bolster post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, integration of machine learning, and enhanced sorting technology. ??Like the agricultural sector, carbon emissions must be decreased in the packaging chain. Packaging material reduction can support that. Producers and brands must look at their entire value chain to see what areas will contribute the most to the reduction. At the beginning of this year, it was reported that Walmart reached its Project Gigaton ambition six years earlier than expected.? ?
