In Nonprofit Quarterly’s “Building a Reparative Organization and Nation” our CEO, Aria, unpacks our movement’s relationship with power and affirms the need to see the humanity in our leaders and staff, in order to create healthy organizations. “Leaders also deserve to feel seen and cared for in the work, and compassion across levels of power and authority is critical to building just and equitable organizations and a just and equitable world.” - Aria Florant Aria also shares LV’s framework that articulates how we can name, own, and distribute power – and therefore build a reparative organization. https://bit.ly/4cx2XBk

How can a non profit industry support marginalized communities? To better support marginalized communities, a non-profit organization should prioritize understanding the specific needs and challenges of these communities through active engagement and consistent communication. Building trust through transparency and involving community members in decision-making processes is crucial. The organization should focus on empowerment by providing education, training, and leadership development, while also fostering partnerships with local organizations, government agencies, and businesses. Culturally sensitive approaches and advocacy for policy changes are essential for addressing systemic issues. Implementing sustainable, long-term solutions and regularly evaluating program impacts, incorporating community feedback, will ensure the support provided is effective and meaningful.

Before approaching a community leader to join your Nonprofit Board, make their value-add clear. A successful leader needs a diverse board of people with different experiences, backgrounds, expertises and networks. The prospect must clearly understand how they fit into that mix, the value they bring and the benefit they'll get from joining the board. After all, you should want them for the potential impact they can have on the organization, not just because they are a well-known name. – Forbes / Patrick Riccards, Driving Force Institute #BoardLinX

Reflecting on an insightful article Jack Graham shared with me, I felt a profound connection with the discussion on generational and philosophical differences in racial equity work. The article speaks to my journey to founding STEM to the Future. Despite my deep involvement in social justice through three different nonprofits, I consistently sensed a disconnect with leadership and a lot of my colleagues when it came to our fundamental approaches to change. Both in how we approached the work and in how the organizations were structured. This piece shed light on the traditional mindsets that often pervaded the spaces I worked in, affirming my resolve to bet on myself and establish an organization that truly embodies radical ideals. The article says "Rather than force an organization to become what you want it to become, look elsewhere. Better yet, create the thing you want." After seeking change within existing structures and finding it elusive, I was compelled to create the space I envisioned—one where innovative approaches to equity and justice aren't just welcomed, but are foundational. Now, as I lead STTF, I'm committed to ensuring we never stray from that transformative path. Check out the entire article and let me know what parts resonate with you. https://lnkd.in/gGfSSmYw #PlantingtheSeed #nonprofit #leadership

Looking forward to this webinar! If you’re in philanthropy and you’re interested in learning more about how to have an impact through shareholder engagement, check it out! #impactinvesting #philanthropy
Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Laura Campos (Nathan Cummings Foundation), Laura Nixon and David Stocks (The Educational Foundation of America) and so many others to try and figure out how to transform and increase how #philanthropy uses its power and privilege as #shareholders of the world's largest and most influential #public #companies to do good. If you work at a #foundation who is eager to increase its impact, align more of its #endowment with its #grantmaking goals and grantees' #campaigns, we invite you to register (https://lnkd.in/eYhzXrh7)?to learn more about our "learn-by-doing" pilot cohort as well as how to apply. Tell your friends, this work takes a village. P.S. - Tremendous excitement and gratitude to Rickke Mananzala (New York Foundation) for agreeing to support this burgeoning collaborative, we're so grateful for NYF's values alignment and strategic partnership.
