According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who identify as LGBTQ+ have an increased risk for a variety of health threats when compared to those who identify as heterosexual, including increased risk of getting cancer. While progress has been made in understanding and addressing healthcare disparities, there is still much research and work to be done, particularly in the realm of cancer care. According to OVAC member, American Cancer Society, potential cancer disparities in specific cancers like cervical, breast, and lung, are largely due to factors such as the fear of discrimination, lack of knowledge and training among healthcare providers, and increased likeliness of being uninsured and experiencing homelessness. More research needs to be done to understand cancer disparities among LGBTQ+ people and all underserved populations. By increasing federal funding for #CancerResearch and #CancerPreventionPrograms broadly, we can address the research gaps among understudied populations at The National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With more federal dollars allocated to cancer research and prevention programs, we can help save lives. Read more resources here: https://lnkd.in/gWuu99xH https://lnkd.in/eKBV8b7

WATCH (and SHARE): As part of the National LGBTQI+ Cancer Network's commitment to providing cultural competency training for healthcare providers and advocating for #LGBTQI+ individuals navigating cancer, we offer opportunities for those on this journey to share their personal experiences. For many queer folks, healthcare encounters aren't always positive. These interactions can be marked by a lack of empathy and understanding, often shaped by discrimination based on who we love, how we present, or simply who we are. LGBTQI+ individuals, like everyone, deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of their identity or illness. #LGBTQ+ individuals likely have a greater risk of cancer and fare worse than heterosexual patients because of numerous risk factors associated with the stress of systemic #discrimination, per recent reports issued by @American Cancer Society and published by @American Association for Cancer Research. #Oncologists need training on how to provide culturally competent care – and we need more research on how to develop specific treatments. #NationalCancerPreventionMonth #healthequity #cancerresearch #gayrights #innovation https://bit.ly/3T10hUZ

Where you live. Who you are. Where you come from. What you do. Who you love. These are called the social determinants of health, and they represent the many factors that may lead to inequities. They can unfairly stand between you and cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Access to life-saving #cancer diagnosis, treatment and care should be equitable for all.
