Last week, I experienced a medical emergency. (I didn't know it was until I was already at the doctor). Always the maximizer according to Strength Finders, it wasn't lost on me that my history working in Public Health and my current job focused on increasing workforce had come crashing together in a real life example. As a Public Health Professional, nearly every day was spent working on some level to address access to health care for North Dakotans, especially in rural communities which often meant creating incentives and programs meant to bring practitioners not only to the state of North Dakota, but to our areas of highest needs. North Dakota suffers from a serious lack of healthcare specialists, despite having some phenomenal systems to work in. In my work now, I spend my days creating and changing policies and systems to enhance pathways in health care, international licensing and credentialing for physicians and other providers, workforce incentive and workforce adjacent variables that contribute to or are barriers to people working and living in certain places. It was not lost on me how fortunate I was to learn last week when I needed emergency medical care for my eye that a Retinal Specialist had only recently been hired and moved to the Minot area, just 40 minutes from my home. If this experience happened 3 months ago we would have had to travel 9 hours to Minneapolis to get the urgent medical care I needed. While visiting with this physician, I learned that he completed his medical school projects on the need for specialist access in rural communities and specifically chose to practice in this location for that reason. I'm guessing he didn't know when I came into my appointment that by the time I left he would be partnering as a champion and as a potential mentor for new or young physicians considering practicing in rural or underserved communities! And now here is the PSA: If you experience a sudden change in your vision, it is always serious and you should seek medical attention. Do not dismiss it! Thanks to my eye doctor and this Specialist's quick work and most importantly my access to them, I will not be entirely blind in my left eye...eventually! #healthcareaccess #publichealth #healthcareworkforce
