I had the honor of being a 2023 Women in Supply Chain awardee. Lesson #3 – Show Up for Women ? Early in my career, I often heard things like, “How can someone so young lead this team?” or “How is SHE going to do a good job on this project?” Luckily, comments like that made me stronger. As I changed companies and roles, it was shocking how many women clawed over each other for promotions, were too busy brown-nosing the boss or talked negatively about their peers. Anyone else experienced this? ? Over the last 25 years, I’ve had some amazing mentors—both men and women—who helped me identify what’s important to my personal brand early on: integrity, authenticity, and community. These North Stars have provided so much clarity as I’ve made decisions. ? Earlier this year, I was able to show up for my friend and CEO of Madison Avenue Worldwide, Sara Rahn, as she accepted an award from Enterprising Women. As a new business owner, it was refreshing to see women supporting each other in a professional environment. The positivity was tangible, and everyone became fast friends. Why? Because the women in that ballroom want ALL women to SOAR. ? Tips on showing up for women: - Be a sounding board & provide unbiased perspective - Teach young professionals how to navigate stereotypes & negativity - Ladies, leave the competition at the door - Always, I repeat, always show up for their awards ceremonies! ? Because when women show up for each other – in business and in life – incredible things can happen.

Women leaders are once again facing concerning headwinds. Last year, the number of women executives at companies in the S&P Global Total Market Index dropped, the first time that’s happened in almost 20 years of tracking. Good to talk with Bloomberg's Beth Kowitt about what's behind these setbacks and to be quoted along with my brilliant colleague?Erin Reid. #womenleaders

This week Fortune Magazine announced their annual list of Fortune 500 companies. For the first time in 6 years the number of women was flat year over year at 10.4%. How disappointing. Since the 80's I would look at the number of women who were CEO's of these companies as a proxy for progress for women in corporate America. In the 80's and 90's, like many of us, being a CEO of a Fortune 500 company seemed sadly out of reach. In fact there was consistently only one name through those years, the iconic Katherine Graham, who headed the Washington Post after the tragic death of her husband. However, in the late 90's that started to change when the women who entered the workplace in the 70's after the second wave of the women's movement, began to reach the top. Women like Jill Barad, Mattel; @Meg Whitman, Ebay and HP; @Carly Fiorina, HP; Pat Russo, Lucent; Andrea Jung, Avon; Anne Mulcahy and Ursula Burns, Xerox and now there have been over 100. When I joined Catalyst Inc. in 2018, 4.8% of the Fortune 500 were women. In 2023 10.4% were women. We were proud of that significant progress; it was steadily increasing and doubled in 5 years. We were hopeful that it would continue unabated until it became normative to be a women CEO. Now 2024 was flat and we sadly lost one of our two black women (though Toni Townes-Whitley followed another women CEO @Nassic Keene at SAIC). We have so many great women leaders like Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed Martin, Cathy Engelbert, Deloitte and Julie Sweet, Accenture who I had the honor to work with closely as my board chairs at Catalyst. We cannot let this pause become a trend. We have so many qualified women leaders today. Today, women make up over 30% of boards and over 25% of senior management. In my next chapter I am dedicating my efforts to continue to break this glass ceiling and make it not newsworthy for women to lead major companies so that the women of 2030 will not feel like I did in the 80's. #womenceos #womensleadership

There’s nothing like women celebrating each other. Last week I had the honor of recognizing some of the most incredible business women in the Twin Cities! As one of the 50 honorees, I sat in awe as the emcee read the receipts for each person. The brief sentences listing accomplishments, awards, scale, and impact didn’t even scratch the surface of what it took to get to that room. RISKS. Carefully calculated risks. ??There are the scary ones like financial risks to launch a business in an industry with very few of us. ??Quiet personal ones like debating how I’m going to show up at the risk of being “too much” or “not enough.” ?Nagging ones like time risks. If I spend it on my career, will I run out of it with my family? What do I risk giving up if my time is “spent.” ????♀?And the biggest risk of all. Ourselves. Do we believe in ourselves enough to take the leap? In reality, women business owners and leaders are the best budgeters. We are meticulously simultaneously mitigating and accumulating risk every second of everyday. The net profit of all that mathing is impact, profitability, and true leadership.
