Happy Monday! With so much going on in the policy landscape, here are three things you need to know about what's happening in higher education: ? Biden Administration Announces New Student Loan Forgiveness Plan The Biden Administration announced a new student loan relief plan waiving up to $20,000 in interest for 25 million borrowers and offering debt forgiveness for undergraduates after 20 years and graduates after 25 years of repayment. As of April 11, $62.8 billion has been forgiven for 876,000 borrowers under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. ? Department of Education Announcement on State Licensure Regulation Last week, the Department of Education issued guidance on gainful employment and state licensure regulations. Under the new regulations, educational programs are required to meet licensure and certification in all states where the institution has enrolled students through distance education. Given concerns raised by institutions, the Department has agreed to exercise discretion before taking enforcement action on these regulations. Link: https://bit.ly/3vJolDj ? The delayed fall enrollment at many U.S. colleges this year is attributed to the problematic launch of the new FAFSA form, according to The Washington Post. The revamped application, intended to assist students facing financial difficulties, has been plagued by significant issues. This situation is causing concern among schools, particularly regional colleges, as it may deter applicants and impact their financial stability. With only 42% of high school seniors completing the form compared to over 50% last year, NACAC CEO Angel B. Pérez highlights the broader economic consequences of this disrupted educational pipeline. https://lnkd.in/eR25Riiw

It’s disheartening when financial constraints overshadow academic and professional opportunities. I had to cancel my online interview at Newcastle University because I couldn’t find a funding body to cover the difference between home and international tuition fees. Despite my preparation, the financial stress was too overwhelming to ignore. Why is it always about the money? This experience highlights the need for more accessible funding options for international students. #HigherEducation #FundingChallenges #InternationalStudent #EducationAccessibility #NewcastleUniversity
