Over the past few years I've become more interested in motorsport and started to understand recently why it's so appealing as a cybersecurity professional. In motorsport, every split-second decision, high-speed corner, and intense focus can make or break the race. The same mentality applies in cybersecurity: precision, vigilance, and adaptability are crucial. Just as drivers must anticipate every twist and turn, cybersecurity professionals need to foresee potential threats, reacting quickly and precisely under pressure. Racing taught me that it’s not only about speed but control, strategy, and knowing when to push the limits. In cybersecurity, this translates to maintaining resilience, building strong defenses, and having the foresight to stay ahead of evolving challenges. As a Formula One fan, I just read this cool article about how Symantec helps the Williams Racing F1 team meet its cybersecurity needs. I’ve been watching the sport for 11 years and understand that advanced technology, innovation, and data (lots of it) are components of F1’s competitive racing. But what I've never considered is how crucial cybersecurity is to the team, or how a cyberattack can even affect the car’s performance lap by lap. Harry Wilson, Head of Information Security at Williams Racing, put it in perspective for me with this quote: “There are 200 to 300 sensors on a car and that data is streamed in real-time. If those systems go down (because of a cyberattack), that can be the difference between winning and losing a Grand Prix.” It’s true. The teams are always monitoring tire and engine temperatures, the charging of the KERS system, lap times, and so much more. Each of these small details is important to the driver and team in a race. I've heard countless radio messages in Formula 1 when a team needed to “retire the car” from the race based on key data received by the team.
