1 2 3... nothing for me. The hardest thing to get food donors to understand is the 3rd level of our project - because of how it looks... Food insecurity is a curve... and to reach people before they drop to food bank level - you can hold them up 'slightly' with dignity in our ridiculously cheap surplus stores. Levels explained... 1st is the free dignified food bank with chilled/frozen/fresh and ambient choices - no standard box here, talk about what you like, say what's missing from your cupboard, and we fill your bags to suit your family. 2nd the ￡3 per person in the household, because it promotes dignity and people can contribute out of the climb out of the depths of food insecurity. Choices as above of all levels of food. And the 3rd... the confusing bit. The store 'has to be' an environmental project that's open to everyone who wants to save the planet, so that the people who wouldn't be seen dead in a food bank because it's really the most humiliating (no matter how kind we are) feeling, families can access food at half the price (or less) than supermarkets. If we made it a members only thing then many just wouldn't come, they would rather eat dry toast and often people feed their kids and don't eat themselves. I know this because I research it every day when I talk with people. This third section is actually the BIGGEST section that keeps people out of food banks - a step towards the regular supermarkets making a dignified option but still mostly expired BBE food and close to use by... shopping alongside regular people means they don't feel the humiliation - and we don't talk about this bit much - else it makes it a 'thing'.
