Each year, we pause to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces, committing their lives to something larger than themselves. Veterans Day is a reminder of the power of purpose, resilience, and the leadership that emerges when service and sacrifice come together. Military service instills a deep sense of responsibility, courage, and loyalty—qualities that inspire all of us to lead with integrity and commitment. Veterans have set an incredible example of how steadfast dedication to a mission and a team can create remarkable results and lasting impact. They teach us that true leadership isn’t just about commanding; it’s about serving, guiding, and bringing out the best in others. I've experienced this consistently when I've had the opportunity to work with them. This Veterans Day, let’s take a lesson from those who’ve served, asking ourselves: How can we strive to be the best versions of ourselves? Whether in our careers, our communities, or our personal lives, we each have a role to play in creating positive change. The chain reaction of paying it forward often starts with one person, and in Aggieland, we are fortunate to have so many forward-thinking individuals willing to assume this role for the betterment of students, faculty and staff at Texas A&M University. LTG Jensen, director of the Army National Guard and U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) #amsp alum, shares his thoughts on command and the role of the National Guard in today's Army. Kudos to a couple of our resident National Guardsmen Jesse Valles and Russ McKelvey for hosting a great #oparch show! A few thoughts that stuck with me: (1) Solve problems at your echelon. This means enabling the headquarters below you and understanding the mission of your higher headquarters to be at the right place, time and with the right capability to help them win. (2) Every component has a role (Active, Guard, Reserve). Be clear on expectations and invest the resources to ensure you get the right capabilities in the time you need them. (3) Mobilization - it's hard on paper, harder to imagine what it will be like in "real life". We won't know unless we rehearse.
