Alumni networks have been greatly undervalued for decades. So many law firms have an 'annual drinks reception' and think that is enough. Done well, the alumni network should be treated in the same way you should treat your biggest clients. These are people that know the firm, and are often in positions where they have the gift of giving out legal work to external law firms. Relying upon 'existing or latent goodwill' is nowhere near enough. Alumni need to be filtered and treated in very different ways in exactly the same way you would filter firms as potential BD targets. Adopting a 'one size fits all approach' is lazy and is potentially (almost certainly) handing winnable work to rivals.
Debevoise Deputy Presiding Partner Nicole Mesard recently spoke with The American Lawyer where she discussed the importance of law firms growing their alumni networks and its benefits for lawyers and their careers. Read the article here: https://bit.ly/3XKIunD

At Burris Law, we are passionate about helping the next generation of patent professionals develop the skills they need for success. That passion led Kelly Burris, Bejeir Brooks, David Spears, Stephenie Serman and Andrea Velasquez to a meeting with Detroit high school seniors as they prepare to participate in a summer mentorship program. A special thanks to James O. Wilson, acting regional director at the USPTO, and Darrell Ford, patent examiner at the USPTO, for leading the charge with the Urban Alliance. ? Here's a little video from last week, and a link to the FTIL Europe winners for 2024. I know it's a cliche, but it is dramatic how much the profession is changing. My intro article for the FT report talks about how the US law firms' expansion in Europe, and their exponential growth overall, is disrupting historical law firm hierarchies. For many law firm leaders, this is way more worrying than the impact of gen AI on their business models. I predict that over the next couple of years, we are really going to see the difference between those firms who have a strong, clearly articulated strategy and those who don't. Thanks as always to the generous insights from the law firm leaders I speak to every year who also inform the agenda for the FT/RSGI Global Summit, to name a few: Alan Mason, Hervé Ekué, Michael Davison, Paul Lewis, Shane Gleghorn, Sabine Comis at Dechert LLP, Duncan Weston, PhD, Stephen Kensell at Latham & Watkins, Neel Sachdev Thanks also to the FT team, Harriet Arnold and Robert Grange for so many things! & team RSGI! https://lnkd.in/dh89ZTZ9
