Now that I oversee the Internship Program here at Chegg, I've been learning a lot about the landscape. According to a new report from the Business-Higher Education Forum, of the 8.2 million learners who wanted to intern in 2023, 56% missed out completely. And the experience varies significantly based on race and whether the student is attending a two-year or four-year institution. "Hispanic students from two-year and four-year programs and Black students from two-year programs are the most likely to miss out on having an internship—primarily because they did not apply—and Asian students from four-year programs are most likely to be rejected." All of this matters because internships aren't just valuable for students, they're valuable opportunities for employers to tap into the veritable wealth of knowledge and insight that students can bring. There's a lot of things that need to change in the macro to not only open up more internship opportunities but also reduce the inequity, but I do think there is one thing those of us who operate these programs can do in the micro - reduce the barrier for students to apply. I have personally read job descriptions for internships that were as long as 8 pages or as short as two bullet points. Neither does the job at properly conveying the responsibilities and expectations for an intern, and that doesn't make anyone want to apply. Also, if you're open to students from two-year programs, then say it explicitly. And if you're not, why aren't you? Shoutout to Marshall Anthony Jr., Ph.D. for sharing this report with my team. Y'all can check out the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g4sdinGR

Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. The presentation shed light on the struggles faced by students who encounter barriers in securing paid internships, often having to compromise their preferred work settings. https://lnkd.in/eXzNKMXt

The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. For those who want to learn more about the future of academic internships, the The Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting webinar on the subject: https://lnkd.in/e_4JXNwT

Last week, the?American Opportunity Index released a first-of-a-kind ranking of the top 50 employers that can offer recent high school graduates with the best pathway to a sustaining career and increased compensation. As traditional colleges falter in an evolving education and employment landscape, more Gen Z & Gen A are realizing the viability of jumping directly from high school to career training. And many brands are catching on, offering young employees a more flexible, and reactive education and training curriculum - one that not only leaves young people without debt, but also provides a much better chance of full time employment. ?? One example? AT&T offering young people nano degree certifications, virtual internships, GEDs, and an internship program specifically for students from unique backgrounds and underrepresented communities. I’m noticing a promising trend in internship opportunities for college students. Are post secondary institutions capitalizing on this by bridging the gap between knowledge and experience? The National Association of Colleges and Employers' (NACE) 2024 Internship & Co-op Survey suggests a positive outlook, with 47.2% expecting to maintain and 32.2% planning to increase internships for 2023-24 compared to the previous academic year. I've observed Iowa State University - Ivy College of Business putting a strong emphasis on various internship experiences. This shift towards providing both tangible and intangible values is a step in the right direction for post secondary education. Colleges can offer immense value by equipping students with knowledge, skills, and practical experience. Historically, schools focused primarily on education, neglecting internships and hands-on experiences. It's encouraging to see this shift occur gradually, and I look forward to witnessing more widespread adoption of this approach.

If you know any students who are the first generation in their family to attend a college or university and they attend school in Chicago, NY/NJ or LA areas - please do let them know about this amazing program. The monthly workshops and being paired 1:1 with a mentor for the 2 year journey can be a real game changer in terms of building a network, practice interviewing/public speaking, seek internships and be career ready in the profession of their choice. And ANY is always looking for mentors willing to devote their time, experience and network to be paired 1:1 with a student through this journey. It’s a very personalized and tangible way to see the impact you can have on someone else’s life, education and career.
