After we put in a bid at the Shelby Museum silent auction for this model Ford Mustang drag racer, my son spent the subsequent 90 minutes continuously checking whether we maintained the highest bid. He was determined to go home with this gem. Three Online vs IRL thoughts came to mind while I watched him run back to the auction table over and over again. ?? Getting to see the products and bid sheets in person completely captured his attention. If the auction had been online, I don’t think I would have even shown ??him the products in the auction (for the sake of my wallet). ??We put in a bid on 4 products and got outbid on 2 of them. Each item had the bidders’ mobile numbers. A text alert ?? on being outbid could have yielded the auction higher bids and more engagement. ??View-in-person/bid-online could have set up the auction for text alerts AND “you might also like” suggestions to increase bidding on more products. More bids = more money ?? And in a non-auction and fundraiser world, the following translates to our #ecommerce daily lives: 1. Scarcity invites action. 2. Time limits are effective.?? 3. This country has been great and is great because of the people safeguarding each other and the institutions that the founding Fathers designed and left us (yes, I am an adopted Bostonian). Our system has always been about protecting the individuals from the ruling class--be they kings, presidents or party elders. The Founding Fathers believed in the individuals and the local communities and feared the ruling class, entrenched powers and the madness of the crowd in a mob-democracy. They designed a republic system with checks and balances everywhere, not just as a reaction to Monarchy but as a precaution against the evil they can see within themselves--knowing too well that absolute power corrupts absolutely even in American political leaders. And knowing that a clever political leader can always galvanize the mob, in the name of democracy, to vanquish sensible voices and opposition. Let us never get lazy and imagine that we are electing leaders to fix our problems and guide us forward. America isn't Apple, driven forward by a visionary leader as difference maker. Yes, we do need a government to help coordinate activities. But, what we are looking for is not a hero, but the lessor of the evils. The upcoming election or any election that we will vote in is not about identifying our George Washington or Abe Lincoln. It most certainly isn't about good versus evil--that would be too easy. It is about electing the person who will not mess us up too bad, while they are given the admin responsibility to maintain a reasonable working environment for us. We the individuals will be doing the actual work to create prosperty and move the country forward.

Here’s a truth about silent auctions: sometimes, a few lots just don’t move. As a charity auctioneer, it’s my job to make sure they do. And sometimes, that means thinking outside the box and taking bold steps. Here’s one of my favourite examples: At one event, a few silent auction lots weren’t getting any bids. So, I decided to attach something completely unexpected—a virtual beer with a bishop ??+?. Yes, you read that right! The idea of a light hearted chat over a “virtual pint” with a bishop brought a smile to everyone’s face. By the end of the auction, every single lot was sold! Why did it work? ? People love fun – Gala events are about more than fundraising—they’re about creating memorable experiences. Adding a touch of humour or quirkiness can make an item irresistible. ?? ? Confidence inspires participation – When you confidently present something unusual, it shows you believe in its value—and that confidence is contagious. ? It’s about the experience, not just the item – Guests bid because they’re having a great time, and they want to be part of the energy. The lesson? As auctioneers, we shouldn’t be afraid to take risks or think creatively to help sell lots. Whether it’s pairing a unique experience with an item or adding a fun twist, a little confidence and out-of-the-box thinking can make all the difference.
