This is a fantastic article on how to learn!
Science is gradually unlocking the secrets of human learning, and unfortunately for almost everybody trying to learn new things today, they don't involve screens. Here's what we know.

A very interesting article in unlocking the secrets to human learning- I like the concept of empathy in education. Have we become too reliant on digital technology to support learning? I think we probably have? Human empathetic interaction is key! #humanlearning #education #learningstyles #empathyineducation #backtobasics #books #penandpaper

For universities and other organizations looking for ways to successfully use AI, chat bots, and nudging to improve retention and enrollment numbers, this is a great article. Of particular interest is the fact that many students are in need of support in what we would consider "off hours" or the midnight hour when no one is available to help them. This is huge opportunity to leverage AI to provide enhanced support when students most need it.

I just read an incredibly insightful article on Psychology Today about optimizing brain learning, and I think it’s a must-read for anyone interested in human development and growth. From the importance of empathy in learning to the power of flashcards, it covers practical strategies backed by neuroscience. Check it out and let’s discuss how we can apply these findings in our daily lives! #HumanDevelopment #BrainLearning #Neuroscience #Education #PersonalGrowth #LearningStrategies #PsychologyToday #EmpathyInLearning #ContinuousImprovement

I find this premise interesting and a worthy topic of discussion and inquiry. As a former teacher, a former curriculum developer, and a current professional in the K-12 large scale assessment industry, the assumption of unidimensionality seems counter-intuitive to me. Why? The state standards to which I taught, developed curriculum, and align assessment items were/are unique. Is there overlap between the standards? Sure. But the overlapping knowledge, skills, and abilities often don’t represent the core/crux of each standard- i.e., the most important part. So if assessment does indeed drive, or have the possibility to support, instruction and learning (Chudowski & Pellegrino, 2003), the psychometric, unidimensional model underlying K-12 large scale assessments is a meaningful topic of discussion.
Always Blame Undimensionality. Why? Because it is the original sin of standardized testing—even if Charlie DePascale claims there were earlier ones. The role of unidimensional models (and model fit statistics) undermines test development, test use and the reputation of the entire endeavor, industry and associated academic fields. How does undimensionality "set psychometric considerations as the main obstacle to developing valid tests—or tests that can be put to any valid use or purpose?" Well, here's the basic story: https://lnkd.in/eKtPWkB2

"The art of teaching is taking the science and applying it in a way that makes sense. Throwing away the entire science because we don’t understand everything yet is akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Please, save the baby (and the science)." "The Science of Learning" isn't just a buzz-phrase to be discounted. It's not a fad that is going to go out of style, and it's critically important for educators to understand what it really is! Have a look at what Dr. Cynthia Nebel, one of The Learning Scientists, says about the science of learning, and then do yourself a favor and explore the rest of the website (link in comments). Such a treasure trove of resources for ALL educators! #scienceoflearning #learningscience #education #teaching #learning

Just because you can do something with AI, doesn't mean you should. Los Angeles public schools recently dished out $6 million to help prove this point. They contracted with AllHere, a company founded in the Harvard Innovation Lab to help solve chronic absenteeism and drive higher homework compliance via two-way communication between parents and schools. The problem is clear, and a serious one. Truancy in our public school - already too high - was exacerbated by Covid. And students who put in the effort and do the homework tend to do better academically. Step 1 is certainly there. Step 2 is the solution, and the idea that automatic text messaging or an AI chatbot is the solution to entrenched societal problems such as underperformance in school is laughable. Anybody who has had a kid in school knows the last thing the overwhelming majority of parents want is more communication from the school - we are already lost in a sea of communication with them. Adding more is not the answer - quality over quantity rules here. Secondly, kids whose parents are not as involved as they should be in their schooling are not going to be helped by a chatbot that tells them to do more assignments. Time and time again studies show that the zip code in which you reside - not the school you attend or even your DNA - is the strongest indicator of life outcomes. A chatbot is not going to overcome that and efforts to fix this problem should focus on the underlying socio-economic conditions that create this problem: the legacy of redlining, de facto school segregation, housing and food insecurity, transportation barriers, home responsibilities, access to tech (the list goes on and on and I can assure you none of them are solved by an LLM.) Which gives you a scary peak into the due diligence that was done not only by LAUSD, but also the backers of the $8mm Series A round in the company (which has somehow already gone defunct.) This is one of many initiatives proposing AI to solve a decades-old problem rooted in complex social structures that will fail. Not because the AI isn't good, but because it's the wrong tool - don't use a hammer for a screw.

Does the Mail have a Gen Z problem? You have to wonder sometimes, not least with their latest generational bash claiming young people are now after our sandwiches, favouring 'woke' fillings like....chicken. I wondered what the data would find if I could review their articles on Gen Z. So armed with a couple of coffees (probably quite woke, they had oat cream in), I took a scrape of 1000 of their most recent Gen Z articles and did some analysing. I know, geek level aura 10/10. You can read it in full here https://lnkd.in/dR4rphK4 Lots of words were featured regularly (image below) and on further interrogation I found what negative stereotypes were commonly used per topic area as well. For work, career and job for example, stereotypes like lazy, entitled and unrealistic were used. I then got into some sentiment analysis using AI because at this point I was most certainly bias. In short - yes tone leans on sensationalism with a focus on polarising or emotionally charged narratives, framing Gen Z with a critical or skeptical view. There was also limited evidence these were rooted in objective data or fact, driven largely by journalist style. Well that was an interesting couple of hours spent!
