Living with a Hummer: When I first got the keys to the GMC Hummer EV as my company vehicle a couple of months ago, I knew I was in for a ride like no other. It was an extraordinary machine. From the moment I settled into the driver’s seat, the Hummer EV's exceptional features began to unfold. Its sheer power was the first thing that struck me. With up to 1,000 horsepower and a jaw-dropping 11,500 lb-ft of torque, this vehicle is a beast on the road. The acceleration is nothing short of exhilarating—0 to 60 mph in just about 3 seconds. Yes, you read that right. For an all-electric truck, these numbers are astounding. But the Hummer EV isn’t just about raw power. Its versatility and range make it a true daily driver. I managed to clock in a solid 505 km on a single charge, making it perfect for my professional and personal errands. The Ultium battery tech that powers this marvel is a testament to GM's commitment to innovation and sustainability. One of my favourite features was the CrabWalk mode, which makes this beast super maneuverable—a feature that turned many tight parking situations into a breeze. And let’s not forget the Extract Mode, which raises the vehicle by about six inches, enabling it to clear obstacles that would leave other vehicles stuck and stranded. As I handed back the keys last week, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of awe and gratitude. Living with the Hummer EV was more than just driving a car; it was part of a revolution. Kudos to GM for pushing what’s possible in the EV space. The Hummer EV is not just a vehicle; it’s a statement. It's hard to believe it's been 16 years since Dodge unveiled this futuristic, 270hp electric concept car with a 250 mile-range at the L.A. Auto Show. The Zeo never made it to production, and Dodge never became a player in the EV category. But it's fascinating to see how it foreshadowed the EV revolution we're experiencing today. Are we approaching a new dawn for EREVs (Extended Range Electric Vehicles)? Scout Motors Inc. — owned by Volkswagen since 2020 — just unveiled two new concepts, the Terra (Pickup) and the Traveler (SUV), in Nashville. The Scout brand draws inspiration from the original International Harvester Scouts, produced from 1961 to 1980. While some might expect these models to share Rivian’s platform — following VW’s recent $5B investment in Rivian — they’re actually built on an entirely new body-on-frame platform. A key feature of the SUV model is its gas-powered range extender — a practical solution for those considering EVs but concerned about range anxiety. This small internal combustion engine doesn’t drive the wheels, instead it recharges the battery when needed to extend range. Interestingly, this approach was pioneered around a decade ago by BMW with the i3 and General Motors with the Volt, but it was gradually phased out as battery energy density and performance improved.
