#InternationalDayOfTheGirl reminds us of the importance of countering limiting stereotypes about girls with empowering descriptions. Research shows that when we think critically about the words we use to describe girls, it can change attitudes about gender roles, improve girls’ self-esteem, help girls see themselves as leaders, and boost resilience to bias and barriers. With the right support and resources, the potential of the world’s more than 1.1 billion girls is limitless. And when girls lead, the impact is immediate and wide-reaching: families, communities, and economies are all stronger, and our future is brighter. Through engaging activities and discussions, girls will explore their unique leadership qualities, learn to recognize limiting stereotypes, and gain strategies to stand up for themselves and others. Registration is open now, and sessions begin October 29. Parents and caregivers, you can sign up your girl for FREE here: bit.ly/3zYTuod

Womanism is a social theory deeply rooted in the lived experiences and traditions of Black women, emphasizing the importance of community, resilience, and holistic wellbeing. ???? Lilac Impact Services uses womanist principles to apply comprehensive approaches. There is an awareness that it takes time and effort to unpack the challenges that mold a group’s capacity to be effective. Leadership is much more about listening and presence than delegating roles. As Rev. Dr. Emilie Townes wrote, we must think about the places we occupy and our commitment to the people there. We all bring our experiences and perspectives into every space we are in. It is important to acknowledge this and pivot collectively as needed. Lilac is focused on continuous learning and applying the theoretical to practical, real-world solutions. #Womanism #LilacImpactServices #CommunityEngagement #Leadership #HolisticApproach #ContinuousLearning #BlackOwnedBusiness #SocialImpact #CapacityBuilding #Consulting

Does language actually matter? When it comes to motivating action, it appears so, according to this recent report. Framing the gender gap in leadership as "men are over represented" elicits a stronger response than "women are under represented". Same reality, but two different messages. Where else have you seen this dynamic at play? How conscious of this are you when you speak? Mark --------------- I love equipping and inspiring great leadership and deep faith! ?? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????????????????? ?????????? ???????? ???? ???? ???????????? ???? ???????????????????? ??????????? This post isn't about Kamala Harris or politics; it's about bias. It was disappointing to see Harris criticized for her laughter. Critics say its inappropriate for a future President. Such comments have not been made about the characteristics of the men. Why? This isn't about one individual; it's about a pervasive bias that undermines many capable women. We must challenge these biases and support women by recognizing their achievements and contributions without them having to constantly validate their worth. As individuals we may not be able to change the world, but we can impact our circle of influence. We must create environments where leadership is measured by merit and vision, not outdated gender stereotypes. I hope you agree. #Leadership #WomenInLeadership #BreakTheBias

?? Words Matter: The Subtle Power of Language ?? I've been reflecting on the language we use in professional and academic settings, and one thing that stands out is the tendency to refer to adult women as "girls." Let me be clear: This practice is patronizing, distasteful, and completely unprofessional. By referring to grown women as "girls," we subtly suggest that they are not mature, capable, or responsible. It’s a way of infantilizing us, minimizing our power and authority in spaces where we’ve worked hard to establish ourselves. Language shapes perception, and it’s time we recognize the importance of using it with intention. When we address women in the workplace, in schools, and beyond, let’s do so with the respect they deserve. We are women, professionals, leaders, and experts in our fields. Let’s ensure our language reflects that. ???? #WomenEmpowerment #Professionalism #Respect #LanguageMatters #Leadership #VerbiageMatters

As per the American Psychological Association, there are many evidence-based strategies that offer a promising path toward a future where gender disparity in leadership is a thing of the past. According to experts like Anna Marie Valerio, Ph.D. and I/O psychologist Victoria Mattingly, PhD providing #women with key #experiences, #feedback, and #network development opportunities from the onset of their careers can significantly impact their ability to take on #leadership roles. Here are some ways the article highlights support: 1??Establishing mentorship programmes that focus on sponsorship is essential, as sponsors advocate for advancement opportunities. 2??Supporting participation in women-led professional organizations can enhance women's leadership skills, aspirations, and confidence. 3??Allyship, especially from male executives and across various intersectional lines, plays a critical role in advancing women into leadership by leveraging privilege to advocate for gender equality. ??In summary, organizations can bridge the leadership gender gap by identifying potential female leaders early, offering mentoring and crucially, sponsorship, to support their career progression. ?In your experiences, what other successful strategies have you seen implemented, particularly in the international civil service environment that could be added to the above? Confidence is a skill that needs to be developed and worked on. However, if your skills cannot be put to good use or start being criticised or eroded, then they will disappear over time. Girls and women do not need fixing; it's the systems around them. What are you doing to support those around you to develop their skills and levels of confidence?
When women and girls assert themselves, they often get a negative reaction. Women are criticized for being aggressive, and girls are told not to be bossy. This happens because of age-old stereotypes that lead us to expect women and girls to be nice and friendly. When they assert themselves, they go against that expectation—and as a result, we tend to like them less. When you hear someone criticize a woman or a girl for asserting herself, ask them about it: “That’s interesting. Would you have that reaction if a man/boy did the same thing?” Learn how you can help girls reject limiting stereotypes and embrace their leadership superpowers at LeanInGirls.Org. ??
