It's the last day to GiveBIG for Hedgebrook! Our goal this year is to raise $3,600 in honor of 36 years of women-identified storytellers at Hedgebrook and challenge our supporters to surpass last year's record of 35 donors. Thanks to your generosity, so far we've raised $3,255 from 20 donors! But, we still need at least $345 and 16 more donors to participate in order to reach our goals. Active Listening is a thread that runs through so many powerful interactions. I'm working on a Respect in the Workplace Workshop- Active Listening is a component. Last Week in preparation for a Trust Session- Active Listening was a critical component and on and on. Active Listening is a Superpower that we all need to master. The subset of Active Listening that I work on constantly is: listening to understand and not respond! Whew ! Having that legal/employee relations lens where I'm formulating rebuttals in my head makes this one particularly difficult but i'm pleased to say I'm continually improving and I am learning so much by listening to understand. I am planning a charity event to give back to moms/women in need and I have two goals that I would love help with! 1. Building an event every year that gives back to moms/ women in need. How much time does staff spend talking about the organization vs. putting the 'mission in action' in front of your audiences? While annual meetings are typically staff-driven and steeped in formality, the team at GSCCS made the decision to put the mission front and center. Here's how we led with the mission last week: ?? Girl voices took the lead in different parts of the meeting. ?? We featured an inspiring girl panel (pictured below), giving girls the stage to share their voices on issues facing girls. Even in a virtual format, attendees asked this panel question after question, cheering the girls on as they shared their perspectives. ?? Girls facilitated the roundtable discussions on key topics, with council staff supporting them every step of the way. By showcasing the mission in action, we ensured our message truly resonated with everyone in the room by putting the focus back on why we're all there and who it's all for—the girls. The more we embody our mission, even in procedural formats, the stronger and more impactful our message becomes. How do you deliver the 'mission in action' to your audiences? This article about small-dollar giving viewed through the lens of democracy makes some great points, especially when you’re planning #ComprehensiveCampaigns. Campaigns tend to celebrate the 7-, 8-, and 9-figure gifts, and they should. They push an organization to and through its goal and they build the foundation for stronger giving efforts with other #donors. But it’s important to cultivate and celebrate donors who make smaller gifts during a campaign for so many reasons: ?? A strong donor pyramid needs a strong base. ?? The next campaign depends on the donors who didn’t make their lifetime gifts this time around. ?? Given that so few of us can make the kinds of gifts that make the news, we all need to be reminded that our actions–and voices–matter, not just the people who have a bigger platform. — ?? Today is the 3rd Annual #GivetoWomenAndGirls Day! ?? This national campaign, led by The Women's Philanthropy Institute (WPI) at Indiana University Indianapolis, seeks to raise awareness of the funding gap that exists for nonprofits devoted to women and girls, and encourage an increase in support. Issues affecting women and girls have received more attention in recent years, but the share of total philanthropic support directed to organizations supporting them has remained stagnant and strikingly low. ??
