In the wake of so many recent hurricanes, so many throughout the country are still devastated and recovering. As someone who has lived and worked in New Orleans for most of her life, Tania Tetlow has witnessed many natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Despite the tragedy of these disasters, she has gained perspective and wisdom on how working together and caring for each other could change the world. On our most recent episode of The Catholic Leaders Podcast, Tania joins hosts Kerry Robinson of Catholic Charities USA and Kim Smolik, scholar-in-residence at Collegeville Institute, to shed some light on what we can learn as Catholics when we experience the devastation of natural disasters. As president of Fordham University, Tania knows the importance of leading with inspiration and hope, even in the darkest of times. ??Is the Red Cross organization one big sham?? ??? ? ? ??? ? ? In light of recent events from Hurricane Helena, I had been looking for ways to contribute to the recovery of those affected.? ? ? Truly heartbreaking series of events that hit close to home because it affected some really close friends.? ? ? The Red Cross organization popped into my mind very briefly but then I recalled reading about it in Griffin's book "The Creature From Jekyll Island". (?? talk about a book that flips your world upside down!)? ? ? And it was NOT what you would expect to read about ??? ? ? And then there's this article that talks about the organization spending 25% (yes, 1 out of every 4 dollars!!!) on internal operations costs during the 2010 Haitian earthquake fundraising efforts:? ? ? https://lnkd.in/gHDjwF_u ? ? Needless to say I opted out of using that organization and frankly, probably won't use them ever again (like Wonder Warrior Project).? ? ? Instead, I collected some items from local family and went to Walmart to purchase additional supplies and sent them down via small airplane.? ? ? Thoughts? #redcross #americanredcross #naturaldisaster #integrity #nonprofit #help #scam #bebetter

Great layout about the reality of disasters.
CEO of the market's highest rated social impact platform - Groundswell | Executive Chairman at Team Rubicon
Hard truth: Hurricane Helene is going to devastate Florida's coast tonight and nobody will care because it will hit poor communities. It always makes people cringe when I say this, but after 15 years in the disaster response space I know that it's tragically true. American's will support their own community. They'll support a community they vacation in. They'll support a community if a celebrity tells them to, or if their favorite sports team plays there. But if it's a community full of down-on-their-luck Americans? Nah. It's a sad state of affairs. A few years ago, when a horrific wildfire ripped through Maui, I received multiple phone calls from TR donors within an hour of each other, each pledging $1 million or more. After two or three, I had to answer the phone and tell them that Team Rubicon was no longer accepting donations for that disaster, conscious that our org may not be able to spend the funds efficiently enough (wildfires are sometimes challenging for orgs like us to operate in - another story). Later that same week, Hurricane Idalia hit the panhandle of Florida - devastating a swath of communities nobody had ever heard of. I called those same donors back, did they still have funds available? Some of them feigned interest, but ultimately we heard things like, "I just don't feel a connection with that community." In some ways that's fair. It's natural to have a more visceral reaction to a place you've spent time and developed memories with your family and friends. However, looking at disaster support through this lens leads to a massive imbalance in aid that disproportionately impacts poor and minority communities. I'm not going to pretend that I have the answers. I don't. But I can at least give voice to the issue and challenge Americans from all walks of life to not watch what happens over the next 48 hours with apathy. Those are our neighbors - let's treat them as such. #CSR #philanthropy #disasters #EMS #charity #nonprofit #poverty #teamrubicon #socialimpact #hurricanehelene #hurricane

*****If you are in immediate need of support due to Hurricane Helene, please call or text the National Disaster Distress Hotline for free counseling at: 1-800-985-5990.****** In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, communities in Western North Carolina are in need of assistance. This +++blog post+++ provides tips on reducing stress due to a natural disaster and provides real-time volunteer opportunities for those wanting to help Western North Carolinians. During natural disasters, self-care is crucial for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The chaos and uncertainty of such events can cause high levels of stress and anxiety, making it easy to neglect basic needs like sleep, nutrition, and emotional balance. Practicing self-care ensures that individuals stay resilient and able to cope with the demands of the situation. This may involve setting aside moments for relaxation, eating regularly, staying hydrated, and reaching out to loved ones for emotional support. Prioritizing self-care not only helps in managing immediate stress but also strengthens long-term recovery, enabling people to better support themselves and others during these difficult times. This LinkedIn network is comprised of many resourceful, compassionate professional leaders who share best practices, introspective thoughts, and opportunities for personal and professional advancement. Today, I'd like to challenge everyone to think of where leadership applies in the current state of natural devastation in our country. Hurricane Helene created a magnitude of destruction that is unfathomable, and Hurricane Milton is all but promising to turn worlds upside down in ways previously unknown. It is hard to imagine the ongoing resources needed for all impacted. Government alone cannot provide for all that is imperative in a timely fashion. We are a community regardless of distance that separates us. While we my be limited by our ability to provide hands-on support where devastation is the greatest, there are reputable non-profit organizations that welcome our help through monetary and supply donations. I trust organizations like the American Red Cross and Samaritan's Purse to help those in dire need. Perhaps you have other organizations you trust as well. Let's. Just. Help. I have always strived to be a servant leader--at home, at work, and in our community. Today, "my community" encompasses so many of our fellow Americans who desperately need our help. I compel you all to reach out and assist in any way you can--time, talents, and/or treasures. Let's serve humanity and lead each other through difficult times such as this. Please join me in servant leadership for our communities and our country.

??? Why does it take a hurricane warning for me to take a break? With hurricane Beryl fast approaching, instead of being scared or worried, I actually felt relieved. Crazy right? ?? But the thing is: we will most likely lose power, and so, lose internet. Which means I won’t be able to work even if I wanted to. For once, I can actually disconnect guilt-free from my work and spend time with my family, even if in the middle of a storm. ?? This made me realize that something was most seriously unhealthy about my current routine and I needed to find more balance in my life. If it takes a natural disaster for you to take a break, like ACTUALLY take a break, you might, like me, need a self-care check. Interested in learning about how you can make your workspace a little bit more ‘human-friendly’? ?? My most recent episode with Sarah Hoffman serves as a reminder of the little things we can do to get rid of the ?dehumanizing? culture of work, and better take care of our employees' mental health (and ours!). Tune-in here: https://vist.ly/3cjvf P.S. I acknowledge my privilege in knowing I will be safe as I have a strong roof over my head and the capacity to protect myself and my family. I know many are not so lucky and I pray that everyone stays safe during this hurricane’s passage.?Take?care and stay?safe?everyone! ?? #hurricaneberyl #fundraising #nonprofits #nonprofitconsulting #philanthropy #JustBeCausePodcast

If in the path of the hurricane, don’t stop for a photo op. Be safe! If safe, here are ways to help: ?? 1?? Check on coworkers, family, and friends. Assist them however you can. 2?? Donate $ to a reputable organization on the ground. A few dollars from a lot of people adds up. 3?? Gather donations locally that you can send once the hurricane passes. 4?? Volunteer to go help in the recovery efforts. If you go, ensure you can sustain yourself and not burden needed resources. 5?? Help coordinate efforts from outside the affected areas. 6?? Pause for a moment of thought and prayer for those in the hurricane’s path. It’s on us, don’t wait for the government. You may be waiting a while as bureaucracy is slow to get anything moving. #OwnYourJourney

Considering the recent events surrounding Hurricane Helene, I’ve taken time to reflect on how we, as professionals and community members, can support each other during events like this. These moments remind us of our shared humanity and the importance of showing up for one another. Here are three practical ways we can make a difference for our employees, talent, clients, suppliers, and the communities we call home: 1. Open Lines of Communication: Foster an environment where individuals are informed and feel safe to share their concerns and experiences. Research to find out who in your network has been impacted and then scheduled regular check-ins, text, or one-on-one conversations to ensure everyone feels heard and supported. 2. Flexible Support Programs: Implement or enhance programs that provide emotional, practical assistance, and financial support to those affected. This could include offering to be a support for someone impacted without phone or internet access to find the resources they need the most, access to mental health resources, financial assistance, or flexible work arrangements for those dealing with personal challenges. 3. Community Engagement: Encourage the organizations you are aligned with to participate in relief efforts. Whether it’s through donations, collaborative volunteering, or partnering with local charities, every small action counts in rebuilding our communities and supporting those in need. Sending strength and support to all those impacted by this event. Let’s continue to uplift each other and strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive, even in the face of adversity. Together, we can be a force for good in our communities. ???? #CommunitySupport #Resilience #TogetherWeCan #Leadership #Empathy
