"What is one stereotype about Maritime Chaplains you would like to debunk?" Assumption #1: When a chaplain is spotted on a dock, mariners assume something bad has happened. Unfortunate incidents and situations do commonly involve a chaplain visit. However, these visits are a small percentage of the total visits a maritime chaplain makes. Assumption# #2: Mariners assume a chaplain visit involves some sort of religious obligation or practice that a mariner must involve themselves in. When I visit vessels the primary action that takes place is that I provide each mariner with the opportunity to talk with someone outside of their given circumstance who cares for their well-being. This is much needed in the mariner community specifically because of isolated work environments and the long hitches away from home. The stereotypes and pre-assumptions may make it difficult for a mariner to feel comfortable to reach out. Through conversations, building relationships, and when requested, I do provide prayer and spiritual counsel. But mostly, my visits provide an opportunity to conversate with someone from outside of the day-to-day vessel operations. Please share this with fellow mariners to debunk these stereotypes. Last week 330 participants representing 76 countries met in Asia for the first Global Senders Forum! National Baptist leaders, heads of conventions, seminary presidents and agency directors joined IMB missionaries and national partners to discuss the growth of their unity in fulfilling the Great Commission. “This meeting is a historical first for us. Never in our 179-year history have we convened a meeting of leaders representing more than one-third of the countries on the planet to impact lostness together.” — Paul Chitwood, President of IMB Many of the visiting Baptists can trace their Christian roots to the missionary efforts of Southern Baptists. Today they are owning the strategies for not only reaching their own people groups but sending missionaries to other nations. The event ended with a time of commitment. 59 organizations submitted written commitments, with some having specific resolutions to send more missionaries.
